Subject: Events to Note

Hi all,

Just a reminder about some forthcoming lectures & events:

1. Dr Mary Bruck (ex-Dunsink Observatory, and Edinburgh Univ) will give a
public lecture, sponsored by Armagh Observatory and EAAC on Thursday 12
September at 20.00 in St Patrick's Trian, Armagh. The title is "The
Remarkable Agnes Clerke: Irish Popularizer of Astronomy and early
Astrophysics". Her fascinating book, "Agnes Mary Clerke and the Rise of
Astrophysics" has recently been published by CUP (it's reviewed in the next
issue of STARDUST, out soon). Discount of 20% on copies will be available at
the lecture. Admission is free, but by ticket only; bookable through Armagh
Observatory, tel. 028 (048) 3752 2928, fax 3752 7174, or email to
ambn@star.arm.ac.uk

2. Wednesday 18 September, 19.30, Lecture Room 5, Stranmillis College,
Belfast: First Irish Astronomical Association meeting of the new season: Leo
Enright, well-known writer, broadcaster, science & space reporter &
correspondent, will give a lecture entitled "Water on Mercury, Mars & the
Moon". You may well have heard him presenting 'Talkback' on Radio Ulster for
the last fortnight - a man of many talents! Admission is free, and all are
welcome.

3. Tuesday 24 September, 15.00, St Patrick's Trian, Armagh. Two short
lectures coinciding with the visit of the Antique Telescope Society to
Armagh: Dr John Butler (Armagh Observatory) on "The History of Armagh
Observatory", and Peter Hingley (Librarian, RAS) on "The Historic
Astronomical Instruments from King George III's Collection at Kew". Admission
free, apply for tickets to the Observatory as at (1) above.

4. Wed 2 October: 19.30, IAA meeting, Stranmillis (as 2 above): Dr Barrie
Jones (Open University) " Planets & Life Beyond the Solar System". Other
details as at (2) above.

5. Friday evening 4 Oct - Sunday 6 October: Whirlpool Star Party, Dooley's
Hotel, Birr, Co Offaly. A superb programme this year, including the one &
only John Dobson all the way from California! Yes, THAT John Dobson! Details
from: David Bell at or Mike Murphy at <
mondeo1@gofree.indigo.ie>. I can email you a comprehensive list of
accommodation in the area on request.

6. Saturday 12 October, 19.30. IAA Public Observing Evening, Carnfunnock
Country Park, near Larne, Co Antrim. Telescopes & binocs to view the night
sky, plus exhibition, talks and Julie Thompson & her amazing Mobile
Planetarium Show - not to be missed. Small admission charge for the Country
Park, the IAA event is free.

Finally, there's another low to moderate level aurora alert at the moment, so
it's worth looking at the N sky if it's clear & dark.

Hope you can make it to some or all of these events.

Terry Moseley.
