From: TerryMosel@aol.com Date: Mon, 16 Sep 2002 15:48:14 EDT Subject: Possible Nova + ASGI meeting Hi all, 1. Guy Hurst (TA), via Prof Mark Bailey (Armagh), reports a POSSIBLE NOVA IN SAGITTARIUS: Bill Liller, Chile, reported that there seems to be a new stellar object at RA 18h 02.4m DEC -25d 18' (2000). It appears on three photos taken at 2002 Sept 15.1102UT, 15.1227 and 15.1241 with an 80mm f/1.4 lens, orange filter and Kodak TP film; its magnitude is approximately 8.5. Nothing brighter than mag 11.5 appears on two photos taken at Sept 11.12. He adds that the magnitude is very uncertain owing to severe light pollution caused by the 8-day-old moon about 8.5 degrees away. Bob King, Duluth, USA has reported a visual sighting of the new object using a 0.25-m reflector. On Sept 16.08UT, he estimated the magnitude as 8.0. It's about 1.1 deg SSW of the Lagoon Nebula. This is very low down from Ireland, but you might like to have a look if you can, as soon after Sunset as possible. Observers in the South & SW of Ireland will be best placed. 2. The Autumn 2002 ASGI meeting will be `hosted' by the Departments of Information Technology and Experimental Physics at the National University of Ireland, Galway, and will take place on Friday the 18th of October in the Seminar Room of the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science, which is situated at the north end of the University campus. NB: This is a Professional-level meeting, and is not for the average amateur. If your parent Club or Society is affiliated to ASGI, and you can cope with high level maths & physics, and you would like to attend, notify Dr. Aaron Golden, Lecturer, Dept. of I.T., Computational Astrophysics Lab., National University of Ireland, Galway, Tel: +353-91-524411 ext. 3549 FAX: +353-91-750501, or agolden@epona.physics.nuigalway.ie or asgi@epona.physics.nuigalway.ie and ask if they can fit you in. Let me know if you spot the 'nova' - good luck! Terry Moseley
