Divide into Teams; each Team selects a `Team Leader'/Recorder Complete Initial Questionnaire "Welcome and Opening Remarks": Paul Crute (Headmaster, Royal School Armagh); Mary Bunting and Anne Barrington (Joint Secretaries, North/South Ministerial Council); Mark Bailey (Director, Armagh Observatory) Robert Walsh (Director of Research and Reader in Astronomy, University of Central Lancashire) "Basking in the Sunshine: A New Encounter with our Closest Star" Questions Return Initial Questionnaires; divide into two groups -- `Stars and Solar System' and `Galaxies and Universe' Both Groups (Stars/Solar System and Galaxies/Universe) leave Reid Hall and cross road to Observatory/Planetarium site. Stars and Solar System group enters Planetarium. SSC 2011: The Third Cross-Border Schools Science Conference
General Information
1. The third Cross-Border Schools Science Conference, on Thursday and Friday 5th and 6th May 2011, will bring together in Armagh some 250 Key Stage 3 students (125 on each day), aged 13­ 14, from 10 schools on both sides of the Border to learn about astronomy and related sciences and mathematics, using the facilities of the Armagh Observatory and the Armagh Planetarium, a combination on the same site unique on the island of Ireland. 2. The programme of activities (see below) will last from approximately 09:30 to 14:45: · Plenary lecture by leading astronomer Robert Walsh (University of Central Lancashire, Preston), "Basking in the Sunshine: A New Encounter with our Closest Star"; followed by a cycle of structured educational activities in the Armagh Planetarium (Star Show and Exhibition Area), and on the Armagh Observatory Human Orrery (Weather and Human Orrery Activity). · Plenary sessions and lunch will be held in the Royal School Armagh. · The Armagh Observatory Weather and Human Orrery activity are held outside. Participating students and teachers are strongly advised to bring warm clothing and rain-gear in case of inclement weather. 3. As part of the Schools Science Conference, there will be a prize for the best painting or drawing on the subject `Weather in the Solar System'. · Paintings or drawings should be sent by post to Professor Mark Bailey at Armagh Observatory, College Hill, Armagh BT61 9DG, or by e-mail as a .jpg file to meb@arm.ac.uk, to arrive no later than Friday 22nd April 2011. · Those submitting paintings or drawings should be sure to include their full contact details, and should note that their paintings and drawings will be displayed on the conference website. 4. Information for Teachers Teachers should note the following: 1. Pupils will be divided into two main Groups: `Stars and Solar System' and `Galaxies and the Universe', each containing approximately 60 students. Each Group will be divided into Teams each containing 4 students. 2. No team should contain more than one student from any one school, and students from each school will be spread across both Groups. 3. Students are advised to bring a calculator. 4. Students will be assigned to a specific Group and Team at registration. They must stay with this Group and Team throughout the day. Each Team must nominate a `Team Leader' or Team Recorder. 5. A member of the Armagh Observatory will be attached to each Group as Group Leader, and Group activities will be led by three members of Observatory staff. Members of the Armagh Planetarium staff will lead Groups around the Planetarium Show and Planetarium Exhibition. 6. Teachers should attach themselves to a Group in order to assist in monitoring the Group and moving between activities. 7. Worksheets 1. Working in Teams, students must complete and return 5 worksheets: · Initial Questionnaire; · Worksheet on the Planetarium Exhibition; · Worksheet on the Weather Activity; · Worksheet on the Human Orrery; · Closing Questionnaire.

2. Worksheets will be completed by Teams of students working together. They must be labelled with the Group and Team name, as well as the names of the students in each team and their affiliations. 3. Team Recorders should ensure that completed Worksheets are returned to the accompanying member of the Armagh Observatory at the end of each activity. 4. The Team that returns the best answers (as judged by Observatory staff) will be awarded Prizes donated by the Armagh Observatory.
