Past research and achievements · Many young protostars are known to vary in luminosity. I have developed the first numerical model of gravitational collapse which self-consistently generates accretion and luminosity bursts that can be identified with the eruptions of young protostars known as FU Orionis variables (Vorobyov & Basu, 2005, 2006). It is shown that a protostar has two modes of mass assembly - an early smooth mode when the matter is directly accreted onto the protostar from the infalling envelope and a later burst mode when the matter is episodically accreted onto the protostar from the near-centrifugal protostellar disk. Like the process of throwing logs into a fireplace, the bursts of mass accumulation produce excess energy. As a result, a young star can temporarily brighten by a factor of hundreds to thousands and reveal itself as a FU Orionis variable. These new findings will help understand the processes that limit the masses of young stars and govern the formation of protostellar disks and planets within them. Based on the results of this study, a press-conference was given and a press-release was issued at the 207th Meeting of the American Astronomical Society, January 11, 2006. The interstellar medium of dwarf irregular galaxies is shaped into ring-like structures by energetic processes of uncertain origin. I have numerically demonstrated that such processes as multiple supernova explosions, gamma-ray bursts, and high-velocity cloud collisions create different observable signatures which can be used to pinpoint the cause

of ring-shaped structures in the interstellar medium of dwarf irregular galaxies (Vorobyov, Klein, Shchekinov & Ott 2004, Vorobyov & Basu 2005). · I have developed the Boltzmann moment equation approach for the dynamics of stars (BEADS-2D), which is a finite-difference Eulerian numerical code designed for the modelling of anisotropic and non-axisymmetric flat stellar disks (Vorobyov & Theis 2006). The BEADS-2D code solves the Boltzmann moment equations up to second order in the thin-disk approximation. This allows us to obtain the anisotropy of the stellar velocity ellipsoid and the vertex deviation in the plane of the disk. In most regions of the stellar disk the velocity ellipsoid is well aligned with the radial axes of the polar grid. In agreement with analytical predictions, considerable vertex deviations show up in regions with strongly perturbed mass distributions, i.e. near the spiral arms. The vertex deviations are large at the convex edge of the spiral arms, whereas they are small at the concave edge. The mean vertex deviations correlate well with the global Fourier amplitudes. Near the convex edge of the spiral arms, the ratio of radial to azimuthal components of the stellar velocity ellipsoid can deviate considerably from the values predicted from the epicycle approximation. Motivated by recent observations of plateaus and minima in the radial abundance distributions of heavy elements in the Milky Way and some other spiral galaxies, I have proposed a dynamical mechanism for the formation of such features around corotation (Vorobyov 2006). The numerical simulations show that the non-axisymmetric gravitational field of spiral density waves generates cyclone and anticylone gas flows in the vicinity of corotation. The anticyclones flatten the pre-existing negative abundance gradients by exporting many more atoms of heavy elements outside corotation than importing inside it. This process is very efficient and forms plateaus of several kiloparsec in size around corotation after two revolution periods of a galaxy. The strength of anticyclones and, consequently, the sizes of plateaus depend on the pitch angle of spiral arms and are expected to increase along the Hubble sequence. I studied numerically the formation of collisional ring galaxies and found that the measured radial velocities of gas in expanding rings seriously underestimate the group velocity of ring propagation (Vorobyov & Bizyaev 2003). I also investigated the applicability of a Schmidt law to star formation in ring galaxies and found that it should be modified to account for large shear motions in the inner rings. A pure (unmodified) Schmidt law greatly overestimates the H fluxes from the inner rings (Vorobyov 2003).
