SUMMARY
The present work is a result of five years' investigations carried out by the author in different districts of the basin of Ussuri river and Sikhote-Alin mountains. It is divided into a general part and a systematical one. The former contains a brief account of the history of bark beetle fauna investigations in the region and two chapters bearing on ecology and zoogeography of these beetles. Following problems are discussed in the ecological chapter: distribution of the bark beetles throughout the vertical zones and stations, nutritional relations of the bark beetles and types of their outbreaks, biocenotical relations with some other animals and the role of the beetles in the successions of the forest cenoses. At last some questions on the bark beetle populations (seasonal and ecological) and the formation of the species are discussed. In the zoogeographical chapter the author whi e analysing the areas of distribution of the bark beetles never abandons ecological grounds, viz. their relations with forest landscapes and vertical zones. After comparing the Far East fauna of the bark beetles with that of the adjacent countries, as North America, Japan, China, other parts of the Soviet Union, the author examines the history of the Far East fauna. In the systematical part 125 species of the bark beetles are recorded for the Soviet Far East, 18 species and 2 genera of which being new. A detailed mor phological characterization accompanies each new species as well as the data on its biology, ecology and economical importance. Keys of species for most of the genera are given separately. 1. Scolytus starki, sp. n.

Similar to Sc. confusus Egg., but broader. Head, pronotum and elytra black, slightly shining; body beneath, trochanters and femora dark-brown; antennae, tibiae and tarsi redbrown. Front in the male flat, in the female a little convex, longitudinally wrin kled; in the male sparsely clothed with long light hairs directed inwards; in the female the hairs being more sparse and short; with a tuft of dense red hairs above the mouth; head above densely and finely punctured. Pronotum longer than wide, with faint punctation of fine, somewhat longitudinally elongated punctures, becoming more coarse and long near the front and lateral margins, especially near the former. Elytra one and half time longer than the pronotum, so that the species looks more broad than Sc. confusus Egg., indistinctly narrowing towards the hind margin and much more longer than the abdomen. Striae of rather large rounded punctures; interstices with faint uninterrupted longitudinal lines throughout their whole length; besides elytra with distinct oblique wrinkles, more dense near the suture and obliterating the longitudinal lines on the interstices (sp ecies closely allied to Sc. confusus Egg., but the latter with striae of elongate and more fine and close punctures and interstices covered with rather dense longitudinal interrupted wrinkles); slope of the elytra in sparse erect hairs. Second abdominal segment less oblique than in Sc. confusus Egg. (fig. 60), with more dilated front margin; abdomen clothed with rather long and erect red hairs directed backwards. Hind tibiae with longer hairs of the same colour. Collected on the 2 of August and 15 of September 1936 on the small twigs of Ulmus laciniata in the mountainous fir woods in the upper course of the river Suputinka ( VoroshilovUssuri district). Types in the collections of the Mountainous-Taiga Station and the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences, USSR. 2. Scolytus ussuriensis, sp. n. Length 1.8 mm. Head and pronotum black and shining; elytra dark-brown, slightly shining; legs and flageilum of the antennae reddish-brown; club lighter. Front in the female a little convex, with rather long light incurved hairs at the margins. Pronotum longer than wide, with rather fine punctuation, equal all over the surface. Elytra as wide as pronotum, one and half time long r than the latter. Striae rather deep, composed of round distinct punctures arranged in regular rows; interstices broad in fine wrinkles forming dense network, and some other distinct and smooth longitudinal wrinkles. First three interstices from the suture in sparse small punctures and rather coarse oblique wrinkles situated near the suture; hind margin of the elytra not reaching the apex of the abdomen. Slope sparsely clothed with short light-red hairs. Abdomen as in Sc. confusus Egg., but more convex; second abdominal segment not swollen (fig. 62), with rather coarse punctures and short and light erect hairs (recumbent in Sc. confusus Egg.) more densely clothing the hind margin of the last abdominal segment. Legs with rather long and sparse light-red hairs. Two females were found on the 27 of July 1936 on small twigs of Ulmus laciniata in the upper course of the river Suputinka. Types in the collections of the Mountainous-Taiga Station and the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences, USSR. 3. Scolytus Hneatus, sp. n. Length 5 mm. W holly black, except the reddish front margin of the prono tum and hind margins of the elytra. Tibiae, tarsi and flageilum of the antennae dark-red. Club light-brown. Elytra and pronotum much shining. Front convex, with two impressions: an indistinct one situated near the mouth and a more distinct in the upper part, extending to the vertex; two furrow-like impressions run sidewards from the latter impression at the border between the front and vertex. W hole front covered with close longitudinal wrinkles, less close in the vertex, oblique and intermingled with rather large punctures; a distinct longitudinal keel runs between the aforesaid impressions of the front. Hairs short and sparse, longer at the angles of the lower part. Pronotum as long as wide, with coarse punctures on the front margin and in the lower part at sides; pronotum above up to the base with more sparse and rather fine punctation; front

margin sparsely clothed with long hairs. Elytra a little longer than the pronotum; striae deep, of large, nearly round and close punctures; interstices of the dorsal part with fine small punctures, somewhat longitudinally elongated, and long longitudinal lines; punctures on the interstices at the base and at sides of the elytra larger; elytra sparsely clothed with rather long hairs at their hind margin. Abdomen not concave, the first and second abdominal segments forming very obtuse angle; whole abdomen coarsely punctured and sparsely clothed with erect hairs, more dense at the hind margin of the last segment. Legs also in sparse erect hairs. Two females were found on August 1935 in the Terney district on Ulmus laciniata in the mountainous mixed woods. Types in the collections of the Mountainous-Taiga Station of the Academy of Sciences, USSR. 4. Scolytus grandis, sp. n. Allied to Sc. trispinosus Strohm., differring from it chiefly in sculpture of the front, being not covered with longitudinal wrinkles, but rather finely and closely punctate; short wrinkles left only on the lowest part of the front. Pronotum with punctation (punctures hardly seen) more fine and sparse than in Sc. trispinosus Strohm., and hair clothing less developed than in the latter. The females of the new species considerably larger in size, with the elytra and pronotum more shining, as compared with a long series of the females of Sc. trispinosus Strohm. from the Coast (Primorsky) Region. One female only was found on the 29 July 1934 in the Iman district (river Arm) on Ulmus laciniata. Type in the collections of the Mountainous-Taiga Stations of the Academy of Sciences, USSR. 5. Scolytus brevipennis, sp. n. In the morphological characters allied to the species of the group Sc. aratus Blandf. and Sc. japonicus Chap. Length 3.5 mm (female). Head, pronotum and elytra black, shining; tarsi, flagellum and hind tibiae dark-red; club of antennae reddish-brown. Front in the female convex, with longitudinal wrinkles convergent to the mouth; head above coarsely punctured and impressed with distinctly visible longitudinal line extending to the front. Pronotum somewhat longer than wide, coarsely punctured all over the surface, with punctures slightly elongated lengthwise above, more rounded at sides and nearly confluent at the front margin. Elytra somewhat longer than pronotum, with hind margins more or less shorter than the apex of the abdomen; striae composad of large rounded punctures; punctures on the interstices smaller and more sparsely situated; striae not so deep as in Sc. aratus Blandf., the longitudinal wrinkles on the interstices longer and more scarce (figs. 58 and 59); apices of the elytra with short red hairs directed backwards. Abdomen convex, clothed with light-red and erect hairs becoming longer on the last segment. Legs in short recumbent hairs. Collected (females only) on the 21 of September 1933, and on the 15 of September 1936 in the source of the river Suputinka (Voroshilov-Ussuri district) in the fir woods, on Ulmus laciniata. Types in the collections of the Mountainous-Taiga Station and the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences, USSR. 6. Scolytus rimskii, sp. n. Female in size (4 mm) and partly in form similar to Sc. mali Bechst. Black and shining; club, tarsi, tibiae and apical part of femora brick-red. Front slightly convex, with longitudinal close wrinkles (more close and fine than it Sc. mali); vertex with fine and close punctation, up to the upper part of the front, and a thin median line ending in a small round impression; the whole surface sparsely clothed with light hairs (in Sc. mali Bechst. hairs left only near the mouth). Pronotum as long as wide, gradually narrowing to the f ront, with basal angles rounded; the whole pronotum covered with more or less equally spread, rather large and close punctures (punctation of Sc. mali more sparse and fine, with large punctures at sides). Elytra a little longer than wide, slightly sloping to the apex; striae deep, composed of close

round punctures; interstices broader than striae, with smaller, longitudinally elongate punctures sparsely arranged in irregular rows; slope with scarce erect hairs (striae in Sc. mali not deep, slope more densely clothed with hairs). Only two dead females were found on the 26 of October 1938 in the bur rows on the trunk of Pyrus ussuriensis, 25 km eastwards of Voroshilovsk. Burrows of this species similar to those of Sc. mali Bechst. (fig. 63). Types in the collections of the Mountainous-Taiga Station of the Academy of Sciences. USSR. 7. Scolytus kcnonovi, sp. n. Allied to Sc. semenovi Spess.; more oblong in shape than the latter, 2.1 to 2.3 mm in length. Same as Sc. semenovi Spess. in colour, but less shining, with elytra more light and almost dull. Structure of front and hair arrangement of the male and female the same as in Sc. semenovi Spess. Pronotum somewhat longer than wide, with very fine punctures above becoming more fine and sparse towards the hind margin; punctures in Sc. semenovi Spess. elongate and equal in size, closely situated both above and at the hind margin of the pronotum; punctation of the front margin and at the sides of the pronotum coarser than that in Sc. semenovi Spess. Elytra equal in length with pronotum, a little longer than wide, different in sculpture than in Sc. semenovi Spess., with striae of stretched shallow punctures not much closely situated, while the punctures in Sc. semenovi Spess. are rounded and deep; punctation of the interstices in the new species elongated, larger and more sparse than in Sc. semenovi Spess.; oblique fine wrinkles crossing striae and interstices conceal their regularity; such wrinkles are situated on the sides of Sc. semenovi Spess. from the eighth stria only; from a large series of the beetles it may be observed that punctures in the striae and on the interstices vary in shape and number, but a general aspect in sculpture of the elytra remains invariable; hind part of the elytra clothed with rather long bristly hairs, growing short and sparse towards the front margin; at sides they reach the base of the elytra and on the rest of the surface spread up to the middle. Abdomen concave, with a short blunt projection near the hind margin of its second rather vertical segment that descends more sloping to the middle of the third segment than in Sc. semenovi Spess. (fig. 56); hind margins of the third and especially of the fourth segment in male swollen and elevated in tin middle, so that they seem protruding when observed in profile; projection of the second abdominal segment in the female less confluent towards the hind margin, with the hind margins of the third and fourth segments not swollen and not elevated in the middle; female abdomen clothed with erect curved hairs longer than in male. Tibiae of all legs, especially of the hind ones, with long bright hairs. Collected on June of 1938 in the source of the river Suputinka, Coast (Primorsky) Region, on the cultivated apple-trees. Allied to the European H. crenatus F. and probably being its vicariate. W holly black, slightly shining, without any scale or hair clothing. Front a little convex, finely and densely punctate, with a slight impression, more visible in the male than in the female, below and before the mouth. Pronotum a little longer than wide, more gradually narrowing to the front and more elongated in shape than in H. crenatus F.; the whole surface of the pronotum bars close, fine, granular sculpture, with a visible shining median line along nearly the most part of its length; sides of the pronotum without any tubercles or teeth, as in H. cholodkovskyi Berger and H. nobilis Blandf.; median line on both sides at the base of the pronotum with faint impressions. Elytra a little wider than pronotum, twice as long as its width; striae not deep, but well seen; elongate punctures shining at their bottom; interstices broad with closely situated transverse tubercles throughout the length (H. crenatus F. bears wrinkles besides them); the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th interstices on the slope of the elytra elevated; two specimens of the species in my possession are somewhat defective, having no antennae and tarsi; no hairs and scales

present on the elytra or under surface of the body. Abdomen obliquely truncate, less convex than the surface of elytra. Only two specimens collected on the 17 August 1937 in the middle course of the river Khor (camp Gvasjugi) on a big lying trunk of Fraxinus manshurica. Types in the collection of the Mountainous-Taiga Station of the Academy of Sciences, USSR. 9. Polygraphus abietis, sp. n. Resembles P. proximus Blandf. in shape, but differing from it in dark colour and whitish coating due to the light scales on pronotum and elytra. Length 2.5 to 2.8 mm. Head, pronotum and the most part of elytra black; slope of the latter with reddish shade; legs yellow-red; tibiae black at the base; antennae of the same colour as scales; club more rounded at the apex as in P. proximus Blandf. Pronotum at the base somewhat wider than long, gradually narrowing to its front margin; longitudinal median line on the pronotum faint, but well seen throughout its length; the whole surface with fine and close sculpture, clothed with light gray recumbent scales directed to the meiian line. Elytra as wide as pronotum at its base, and one and half time longer than wide; striae formed of fine nearly invisible punctures; interstices thickly clothed with light recumbent scales (3 or 4 scales in a transverse row) which produce a well visible whitish coloration to elytra, a distinct character of the species. Abdomen and legs covered with short light recumbent hairs. Collected in the Coast (Primorsky) Region (upper course of the river Suputinka) on Abies holophylla. Types in the collections of the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences and the Mountainous-Taiga Station. 10. Cryphalus sichotensis, sp. n. Length 2 mm. Head black; pronotum, elytra and body beneath reddish-brown; tarsi and antennal flageilum brownish-red; club light red. Front in the male concave, in the female flat; rather coarse longitudinal wrinkles of the vertex extended to the front, curving there nearly transversally to the middle; at sides the front in the male clothed with short light hairs, getting denser beneath, with a thick tuft of red hairs above the mouth; club more rounded than in the species of the genus Ernoporus, in shape more closely allied to the species of the genus Cryphalus or to Ernoporicus spes-sivlzevi Berger. Pronotum a little wider than long, with basal angles rounded and sides immargined. Front margin of the pronotum with two distinct tubercles.Spot of tubercles at sides narrower than in E. fraxini Berger, somewhat overlapping the median part of the pronotum and very sparsely clothed with recumbent hairs. Space behind the spot of tubercles with coarse wrinkles and long

whitish hairs directed forwards, becoming longer near the base and angles of the pronotum. Elytra 2.2 times longer than the pronotum, equal in width to the basal part of the latter. Striae composed of distinct but small punctures not so deep as in the Ernoporus species, extending throughout the length of the elytra. Interstices slightly elevated, covered with fine sparse punctures and oblique wrinkles. Scales and hairs on the interstices peculiar to the genus, intermediate to the genera Ernoporus and Cryphalus. Large erect scales, similar to those of Ernoporus, arranged in distinct rows only on the slope of the elytra, being scarce on the rest surface, and absent from the middle of the elytra. Small recumbent scales, generally two in a row, on the interstices clothing all the elytra in Cryphalus and Ernoporus, more or less densely situated from the slope to the middle of the elytra, and scarce, generally arranged one in a row, on the interstices of the front part in the new genus. In connection with the reduction of scales, hairs more abundantly clothing the elytra of this genus. A row of hairlike scale s stretched along the lower margin of the elytra from the rounded apices, gradually transforming into hairs towards the base. Above the slope the scales becoming more scarce, the whole surface of the elytra clothed with hairs, longer on the sides, shorter on the rest surface. Like the scales, the hairs are light-gray in colour and directed backwards. Abdomen clothed with short recumbent darker hairs. Collected in large numbers by the author and by D. P. Vorobjev, in the South of the Soviet Far East in the mountainous woods on the trunks of several species of Euonymus. Types in the collections of the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences and Mountainous-Taiga Station. 12. Eacryphalus semenovi, gen. et sp. n. In shape and size allied to the genus Ernoporicus, as well as in form of the antennae and pronotum, in sculpture of the elytra and clothing being in close morphological relation to the species of the genus Cryphalus. Length 1.2 to 1.3 mm. Pronotum and elytra dark; head and flagellum black; legs brown-yellow; club brown, with two sutures on the external part, less rounded than in Ernoporicus. Front slightly convex, with coarse wrinkles and a longitudinal keel in the male, clothed with sparse dark-red hairs; vertex very finely punctate. Front margin of the pronotum with four (sometimes six) indistinct teeth, two median of them being somewhat longer, and a fovea behind the spot of tubercles as in Ernoporicus, less deep, however, so that the median part of the pronotum not very distinctly protruding as in the latter; base and sides of the pronotum immargined; space behind the spot of tubercles at the base clothed with recumbent scales; the impression (fovea) in recumbent hairs and the spot of tubercles clothed with dense recumbent hairs directed backwards. Striae shallow, composed of small indistinct punctures; interstices in fine transverse wrinkles; rows of large erect scales, peculiar to the genera Ernoporus and Ernoporicus, distinct only on the slope of the elytra in the new genus, being scarce up to the middle and absent on the basal part of the elytra; small recumbent scales arranged by two or three in a row on the interstices covering all the surface of the elytra as in species of the genus Cryphalus; lateral margins of the elytra clothed with large close scales in Ernoporus and Ernoporicus, while in the new genus with hairs only, as in the species of the genus Cryphalus. Collected on the 15 May 1938 in the mountainous fir and broad-leaved woods in the upper course of the river Suputinka (Ussuri Region) on the small withered branches of Kalopanax ricinifolium. Types in the collections of the Zoological Institute of the Academy of. Sciences and the Mountainous-Taiga Station. 13. Trypophloeus populi, sp. n. Length 1.6to 1.8mm. Head and body beneath black-brown; pronotum and elytra light brown; tarsi and flagellum dark-red; club of the antennae brown. Front flat, with rather coarse wrinkles and a smooth median line hardly seen in the females; hairs short and sparse; top of the head in longitudinal fine and dense wrinkles. Pronotum rounded at sides and narrowed to the front, with four prominent teeth at the front margin; space behind the spot of tubercles with fine punctures, growing more coarse towards the margins, and very small tubercles on its upper part; besides, it is clothed with short hairs directed to the spot of tubercles, which is also covered with somewhat longer, bristle -like red hairs directed backwards.

Elytra as wide as pronotum at base, nearly twice as long as wide; striae not deep, of small punctures, stretching to the end of the elytra; interstices finely punctured, with faint wrinkles, densely clothed with small recumbent scales and a row of bristle-like erect hairs; the latter transforming into scales of the same size at the slope of the elytra near the suture; slope of the elytra beginning behind the middle; its interstices in small tubercles; borders of the slope in the females each with a larger and sharper tooth; elytra, especially in the basal part, with transverse wrinkles, crossing both striae and interstices. By the last characters as well as by some other (size, colour, erect scales on the slope of the elytra) this species differs from the closely allied European species, Tr. granulatus Ratz. The transversal wrinkles on the elytra in Tr. populi Kurz. approximate it to the other, East Siberian species of the genus ( Tr. deevi Stark and Tr. niger Stark). Collected in the South of the Soviet Far East; upper course of the river Suputinka on Populus tremula. Types in the collections of the Mountainous-Taiga Station and the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences, USSR. 14. Hypcihenemus corni, sp. n. Length 1.1 to 1.5 mm. Head and body beneath black; legs and antennae light -red; elytra and pronotum dark-brown, dull. Front slightly convex, with small tubercles growing larger towards the mouth, and fine wrinkles besides it; sparsely clothed with short and light recumbent hairs; upper part of the head with fine punctation. Pronotum at base rounded, with several teeth at its front margin; space behind the spot of tubercles with a faint transverse impression at each side; covered rather closely with small tubercles and large recumbent brown scales, transformed into hairs towards the impression; sides of pronotum with much longer hairs; spot of tubercles clothed with the same recumbent hairs, directed backwards. Elytra as wide as pronotum, twice as long as wide; striae of rather large but not deep punctures; the latter fact, as well as the dense net of wrinkles crossing the intersti ces and striae make the punctures nearly invisible. Interstices throughout the length clothed with small recumbent brown scales; larger erect scales arranged in projecting rows only on the slope of the elytra and then transformed into rows of hairs; sides of elytra without large erect scales, with but recumbent hairs only which begin from the curve of the elytra. Abdomen and legs in sparse recumbent hairs. Collected in large numbers in the upper course of the river Iman (rivulet Koluinbe) and the basin of the river Khor (camp Guken) in the years 1934 and 1937, on Cornus tataricum. Types in the collections of the Mountainous-Taiga Station and the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences, USSR. 15. Dryocoetes orientalis, sp. n. Length 2.2 to 2.5 mm. Brown-red, slightly shining; body beneath, front and elytra in their hind part and slope somewhat darker. Front a little convex, clothed with long sparse hairs and bearing tubercles much smaller in its lower part, with tuft of dense golden hairs before the mouth; longitudinal, slightly elevated median line crossing the front in the males. Pronotum a little longer than wide, with its hind angles less rounded than in Dr. carpini; with tubercles transversely and somewhat obliquely directed and replaced by wrink les in its median and hind parts; at the base the wrinkles transforming into smaller tubercles again; structure of elytra approximates the species to Dr. baicalicus Reit.; punctures at base of elytra, though not arranged in visible rows, more expressed than in the latter species. Punctures of the striae large and deep, more coarse than those of the interstices; as compared with Dr. baicalicus, punctation of the species more fine; first stria from the suture shallow. The whole body clothed with long erect light-red hairs, peculiar to the species of the genus, getting maximal length at the sides of pronotum and backwards along the side margins of elytra. Collected in the southern parts of the Soviet Far East (upper course of Suputinka river), on Pinus koraiensis. Types in the collections of the-Mountainous-Taiga Station and the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Science, USSR.

16. Pityophthorus pini, sp. n. Length 2 to 2.5 mm. Black and shining above, with red-brown translucent stripes on the elytra; black beneath; legs dark-red; antennae pale-yellow; top of the head with coarse, front with finer punctation; the latter clothed with rather long erect red hairs. Front margin of the pronotum without distinct teeth; front part of the pronotum with large tubercles, some of which arranged in a row parallel to the front margin; the spot of tubercles transformed first into fine wrinkles, then into faint punctation, both on sides and on the median part; hind part of the pronotum with ill-defined elevated line above; spot of the tubercles and sides clothed with short slightly recumbent hairs directed backwards; elytra longer and a little narrower than the pronotum. Striae of large round punctures arranged in regular rows; interstices smooth, with several rows of rather short erect light hairs, that become considerably denser and longer towards the slope of the elytra; apices of the elytra longer and more acute than in P. micrographus L.; impression (fovea) broad, smooth and shining in front, and in small wrinkles and t ubercles towards the apices of the elytra; its suture at the very apices with four small closely situated and indistinct tubercles; up the suture with larger granular tubercles; round the borders of the impression (fovea) tubercles small and closely situated. Abdomen and legs clothed with sparse short hairs. Collected in the south of the Soviet Far East (upper course of Suputinka river) and on the coast (mountain Snezhnaja, Ternei region) on small branches of standing but withered trees of Pinus koraiensis. Types in the collections of the Mountainous-Taiga Station and the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences, USSR. 17. Pityophthorus sichotensis, sp. n. By general aspect allied to P. micrographus, but in the structure of the elytra approximating P. abietis, sp. n. Length 1.5 mm. W holly black and shining; antennae and tarsi yellowish-red; front convex, flattened beneath, with coarse granular punctation and long hairs near the mouth in the female. Pronotum somewhat longer than wide; its angles rounded at base; rows of tubercles on the front part of the pronotum rather small, arched; front margin of the pronotum without conspicuous teeth, as in the two species described below; space of the pronotum behind the spot of tubercles vague, nearly invisible; the latter clothed with very short recumbent hairs directed backwards. Elytra as wide as the pronotum, twice as long as wide; striae of punctures smaller than in P. lapponicus Stark, but arranged in more regular rows (as in P. abietis, sp. n.); in P. microphagus L. the punctures considerably larger and set in regular rows; the sutural interspace as compared with the latter species slightly elevated and covered with very small tubercles, reaching the end of the elytra; slope of the elytra at the border of the impression (fovea) with small tubercles and red hairs; hairs on the interstices very short, sparse, not reaching the base of the elytra; lower margin of the hind part of the elytra with longer and denser hairs; apices of elytra stretched slightly more than in P. micrographus L., but less than in P. pini, sp. n. (fig. 113); the impression (fovea) smooth and shining; tubercles round its borders as those along the suture considerably smaller than in P. micrographus L. Body beneath and legs bare. Collected in the mountains of the central Sikhote-Alin, on Picea jezoensis. Types in the collections of the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences and the Mountainous-Taiga Station. 18. Pityophthorus abietis, sp. n. Length 1.8 to 2.2 mm. Wholly black and shining except the dark-red legs and antennae; more elongate in shape than P. lapponicus Stark. Front with fine punctation and a long longitudinal keel reaching the top of the front in the male; female with longer hairs bordering front, while in the male hairs being short and sparse. Front margin of the pronotum before the spot of tubercles with more distinct teeth than in the preceding species; punctation behind the spot of tubercles fine throughout the whole surface, but less fine than in P. pini Kurz.; the median elevated line more distinct than in the preceding species of the genus; pubescence of the pronotum same as in P. pini Kurz., as well as the proportion in the length of elytra and pronotum. Striae of more or less rounded punctures arranged in regular rows; punctures of the first

stria from the suture slightly larger and deeper than those of the others; interstices smooth, with short light hairs sparsely arranged in a row up to the slope, becoming denser and longer on the latter and on the sides of the elytra; apices of the elytra normally but more gradually rounded than in P. lapponicus Stark; impression (fovea) less shining than in the latter species, with sparse faint wrinkles; suture and borders of the fovea with granular tubercles as in P. lapponicus Stark, the first three tubercles not differring in size from the other; pubescence of the under surface not so much developed and more light in colour than in P. lapponicus Stark. Collected in the south of the Coast (Primorsky) Region, Voroshilovsk district. Types in the collections of the Mountainous-Taiga Station and the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences, USSR.
