How can I find the MAC-address of my laptop?
As usual: it depends! It depends on the operating system of your laptop!
And then: I don't know and it's not my task to know, so please don't ask me.
Nevertheless, here is what may help you:
Linux
The command /sbin/ifconfig -a shows the MAC-address
as the HWaddr in the first line of the eth0-block of output.
Windows 2000 / XP
In the menu "Start" -> "(all) Programs" -> "Accessories"
-> "System Tools" -> "System Information"
click on "Components" -> "Network" -> "Adapters"
Windows NT
Open a DOS-window by clicking on "Start" -> "Programs" ->
"Command Prompt" and enter the command "ipconfig /ALL"
Windows95 / 98 / ME
In "start" -> "run" enter the command "winipcfg"
and then select your network-adapter. Here
you can find a more detailed description.
MacOS X
The easiest way is to find/start the Apple System Profiler:
Either click on the Apple -> About this MAC -> more Info
or -> Go -> Utilities -> System Profiler
There you can find the MAC-address: -> Network -> Builtin Ethernet
(or -> AirPort if you look for the WLAN-MAC-address) -> Ether
MacOS 8.5 - 9 Here you can find a detailed description.
MacOS 8 - 8.1 Here you can find a detailed description.
How can I start a DHCP-client on my private laptop?
As usual: it depends! It depends on the operating system of your laptop!
And then: I don't know and it's not my task to know, so please don't ask me.
Nevertheless, here is what may help you:
SuSE-Linux
Start "yast2", go to "Network Devices", then "Network Cards";
in the upcoming window under "Already configured devices" click "change", then "edit"
and activate the little button next to "Automatic address setup (via DHCP)"
RedHat-Linux (8.0)
As root: "System Settings" -> "Network";
there edit "Ethernet" and choose "Automatically: check BOTH IP and DNS options."
Mandrake-Linux
Start "drakconf", find the network-configuration and select
"automatic detection" (or similar) to start the DHCP-client.
Windows
As the administrator -if possible- click on "Start" -> "Settings" ->
"Control Panel" ->
"Network" -> "Protocols" -> "TCPIP" -> "Properties",
(choose right adapter!) and activate the button for
"optain an IPAddress from a DHCP server" or "get IPAddress automatically"
or something similar.
MAC OS X
System Preferences -> Network -> Built-in Ethernet (or AirPort) -> TCP/IP
Configure IPv4 -> Using DHCP
