The Local Organizing Committee in Kazan has proposed organizing an excursion to the ancient city of Bulghar, 130 km down the Volga River, just south of where the Volga joins with it's main tributary, the Kama, and widens considerably . Bulghar is a city where the kingdom of the Volga Bulghars had their capital in the beginning of the 8th century, and where they accepted the Muslim religion in the year 922. In the 13th century, the city was one of the most important centers of the Golden Horde.

There is a possibility to go there with a speed boat, which takes about 2-2.5 hours. You will have 3-4 hours there for an excursion and sightseeing. The boat will leave Kazan in the morning and return around 6pm. The excursion is planned for Saturday, September 8th. This excursion presents the opportunity to see the typical landscape of central Russia around the Volga River and the boundary between the forest and the steppe. You can find more information on Wikipedia: Volga Bulgaria, Bolghar, see also images of Булгар (in Russian) on Yandex.ru

Please inform the LOC if you are interested and would have time to participate in this excursion. See the timetable of the excursion here
