Why is this pair such a mystery? No lensing cluster, but look at the amazing similarity of the restframe UV spectra of the 2 images (Steidel & Sargent 1991, AJ, 102, 1610) ! Chandra also shows that their high energy spectra differ. See Chandra pseudocolor images, normal, sharpened, and smoothed.
