Tom's POVRay Fake Wood Texture

The picture above was made with this demo POV file.

About this Texture

My desk has a fake wood surface on it. Examining it, I noticed that the wood texture is made up of lots of very small streaks, sort of like a natural-looking (but fake) hatching pattern. This is an attempt to emulate that look, by using a wood texture, but using streaks to fill in the darker texture. Another pattern of streaks is overlayed on top, so that the streaks are continued (but with less density) throughout the pattern.

Problems and Future Work

I'm still having problems using the wood texture in different orientations. It seems that the full texture doesn't rotate or translate properly from transformations done when specifying the object.

If I'm going to use the repeat warp on the wood texture to make it really look like fake wood (printed from the same pattern again and again), then I need to do the same for the streaks. Although some fake patterns in the real world are created by layering different patterns with different repeat frequencies, to make it appear non-repeating.
