MOTIVATION

This website is meant to serve as a clearing house for radio galaxies and quasars for which X-ray emission has been detected which is associated with radio jets, i.e. knots and hotspots. As resources permit, we will also provide downloadable fits images for public use. If you would like to donate a fits image, have a new example to add to the list, or find erroneous or incomplete information, please email D. Harris

Notes and Comments

Images and other source data can be found on the individual source pages, accessable by clicking on the source name in the left column.
Morphology: we generally use 'linear' to mean a smooth feature (e.g. the jet in Pictor A); 'knot' as a distinct brighter feature in a jet that continues past the feature; and 'hotspot' either as the terminal bright enhancement at the end of an FRII jet, or as one of the multiple features associated with the termination of a jet. Normally 'knots' are found on the inner portion of FRI jets whereas 'hotspots' are mostly at the ends of FRII jets. However, we are not trying to impose distinct definitions, and infer no physical differences beyond these generalities. Although this site does not attempt to include all sources with X-ray lobe emission, occasionally lobe emission may be associated with a visable or invisible jet. For this reason we note: CL = diffuse emission from counterlobe.
Class: FRI RG = Fanaroff & Riley type I radio galaxy; FRII RG = Fanaroff & Riley type II radio galaxy; BL Lac = BL Lacertae object; LDQ = lobe-dominated quasar; CDQ = core-dominated quasar; Sy I = Seyfert I galaxy
PA w.r.t. core: The position angle measured east of north in degrees, or the cardinal direction.
Dist. and scale: We adopt a standard WMAP cosmology [&Omega(M)=0.27, &Omega(&Lambda)=0.73, H=71].
