The SAO (Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory) Summer Intern Program is a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program where students work on astrophysics research with an SAO/Harvard scientist. In 2016 the program will run for 10 weeks from June 5 - August 13. However, these dates may change depending on the availability of Harvard housing. Please check this website for updates.
Students are expected to be in residence at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) for the full duration of the program.
The program is funded by the National Science Foundation and the
Smithsonian Institution. Undergraduate students interested in a
career in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or related physical
sciences are encouraged to apply for the 2016 program.
We are now accepting applications for Summer 2016.
Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents (Green Card holders), and must be enrolled in a degree program leading to a bachelors degree. Seniors who will graduate in June of 2016 (or before) are not eligible.
Application information:
We ask for an essay (600 to 800 words, submitted as part of the on-line application) describing academic and career goals, interests, relevant work experience, why you would like to be in our program and why you would be a good candidate. Please see FAQ 34 for more information about what to include.
Transcripts must be uploaded electronically on the on-line application form
Names and email addresses for submitters of reference letters must be included on the application form. We will send submitters of reference letters instructions on where to upload their letters after you enter their information on the application form and hit "save".
