The SAO Summer Intern Program

Applications are invited from undergraduates to participate in the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Summer Intern Program at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, MA.

We anticipate offering ten astronomical research positions during the summer of 2016. The program will likely run 10 weeks from June 5 - August 13. However these dates may change depending on the availability of Harvard housing. Please check these pages for updates.

Students are exected to be in residence at the SAO for the full duration of the program.

Research opportunities may exist in all areas of astrophysics, including extragalactic and Galactic astronomy, interstellar medium and star formation, stellar astrophysics, laboratory astrophysics and astro-chemistry, instrumentation, supernovae and supernova remnants, planetary and atmospheric science, and cosmology.

The program hopes to provide students with the opportunity to present a paper at a scientific meeting, given the availability of funding.

The financial award is expected to be $5000.00 for the summer. Housing and travel will be subsidized.

Summer Interns are required to write a research-style paper (approximately 10 pages long) over the course of the summer and to present the results of their work in the form of a 15 minute oral presentation at an "Intern Symposium" at the end of the summer.

ELIGIBILITY:

In order to receive any funding, internship applicants must be U.S. citizens or hold a valid green card. No other form of visa or permit can be accepted. Under NSF guidelines, we may accept applications from foreign students if they are able to pay all of their expenses with a comparable financial award from a fellowship provided from elsewhere (home institution or home country). We need proof of such outside support. Foreign students must, of course, have valid documents allowing them to be in the U.S. legally. Applications from foreign students who meet these criteria will be considered equally with all other applications.
Students who are U.S. citizens but who are attending colleges or universities not in the United States are eligible.
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a program leading to a bachelor's degree (those already holding a bachelor's degree are not eligible).
Graduating college seniors and students on a leave of absence are not eligible.

A COMPLETED APPLICATION MUST INCLUDE:

the on-line application cover page including a 600 - 800 word essay entered directly (not uploaded) into the application form.
2 letters of recommendation in pdf format from professors, supervisors or others who know you well (submitted electronically through a secure upload site as described elsewhere (--NOT mailed or e-mailed to us--), and
up to the three most recent transcipts from colleges or universities you have attended, uploaded electronically into the on-line application. Unofficial or scanned copies of official transcripts are acceptable for the application process. Make certain your name appears on each transcript. If you receive an offer from us, you will then be asked to send an official transcript before your appointment can be finalized.

TO APPLY: You must be registered to access the on-line application. Go to the Fellowship Application Login page. Select "Update Account" then "Register". On the Registration page, enter your full email address and a password of your choice. Repeat the password for verification and select "Register Now".

If you have difficulty with the on-line application form, please write to us with a complete description of the problem. We want to make the application process as smooth as possible.

Remember to:

Submit through the electronic on-line application site, the application form, which includes your essay, names and email addresses of those writing your recommendation letters, and upload transcripts from up to three colleges or universities you have attended. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable. Make certain your name appears on each transcript uploaded.
Contact those you wish to write letters of recommendation for you, and enter their names and email addresses into the electronic application form early to give them time to respond before the February 1 deadline. They will be notified by us in a separate email with instructions on where to upload their letters after you enter their information on the application form and hit "save". You do not have to have completed the rest of the application (essay, etc) at that time. Recommendation letters must be in pdf format for upload, and will ONLY be accepted in this way. Other formats are not readable after upload. Do NOT have letters sent by FAX or ordinary email. They will not be accepted.
By agreement between all astronomy REU program directors, notification of applicants regarding their status and offers for astronomy internships for the Summer 2016 will begin in early March 2016. Please see Frequently Asked Questions FAQ #38-#42 for more information.
The SAO Summer Internship program is unable to fulfill pre-arranged partnerships between applicants and scientists.
