The ASSIST: A Uniform Interface to Software and Information
The ASSIST implements a uniform graphical interface to software and
information for the X Window System. Developed by
Eric Mandel
and
Mark S. Ackerman,
it supports the creation, organization, and management of arbitrary
'information node types' such as documentation, help, tutorials,
questions and answers, etc. The ASSIST also can manage and control
analysis systems and programs such as IRAF and SAOtng. The final
release of ASSIST supports a World Wide Web node to provide
asynchronous retrieval and display of Web documents. It also uses the
X Public Access mechanism
to communicate with other processes.
The ASSIST is available as part of the
SAO R&D software suite (accessed from the SAOtng page).
The ASSIST was developed in 1994-1997 with support from
NASA's Applied Information Systems Research Program.
