Just came back from the lecture (actually had dinner). Aside the lecture provided me an impression that there are similarities between micro-array data analysis and astronomy data analysis, it cast me a question, “What is the role of statistics?” (Empirical) data analysis and ad hoc procedures? Probabilistic models and new theorems? The same dichotomy has been ruling me although I believe two could be combined. Prove the procedure by simplifying the problem lay out (data structures and models) and introduce working procedures for massive data. In between critical eyes have to watch the bridge is sound and solid. Otherwise, people jump between two points assuming that they were used to connected. A negligent glance connects two ends of different bridges and leads scientists to jump from empirical methods based on data to the theory not satisfying the data properties.
