Prof. Lewalle has two major research interests: the application of multiresolution analysis to engineering systems, and the theory and modeling of complex flows.

Based on wavelet theory, the multiresolution focus is divided between the analysis of experimental data --- from fields as diverse as wakes of bluff bodies and nerve response data, hypersonic boundary layers and material defect characterization, coaxial jet mixing and bypass transition in boundary layers --- and the wavelet transform of fundamental equations --- diffusion, Poisson, Burgers, Navier-Stokes.

The modeling of transitional, turbulent and/or two-phase flows presents opportunities to apply these ideas to practical problems.
