The Great Artist Linking Project...

There is a new area in the music archives:

/pub/music/artists

This area allows you to view the contents of the archives by artist. In
the sub-directories under this section, you will find links to all of
the other types of data available in the archives. For example. If you
want to see what is available by Tangerine Dream, you can move to
t/tangerine.dream and look at the mailing list, the discography, the
lyrics, and the pictures via that directory. The alternative is to look
in /pub/music/{pictures|lyrics|discog}/t/tangerine.dream

Directory links only work one way when using ftp so you can get TO
information easily but it will be a pain to get backwards into the
/pub/music/artists directory. In FTP, you can use:

cd artists:

to quickly move to /pub/music/artists.

With the addition of this area, another project to link the bands by
musician name has been started. This is best described by example.

Jon Anderson was a member of the following bands at some point (and
there are files in the archives for these bands...)

Anderson Bruford Wakeman & Howe
Jon Anderson solo
Yes
Jon and Vangelis

In the directory /pub/music/artists/a/anderson.jon, you will find links
for anderson.bruford.wakeman.howe, yes, and jon.and.vangelis.
Similarly, inside jon.and.vangelis, you will find links for
anderson.jon and vangelis.

To create this massive structure of links, I am calling upon you, the
population of USENET and users of the archives (via whatever means you
use them) to help.

To create the above example, the following links are needed:

link anderson.jon anderson.bruford.wakeman.howe
link anderson.jon jon.and.vangelis
link anderson.jon yes

If you would like to help make this a success, please e-mail
datta@cs.uwp.edu with lists like the example above. I will then add
these links into the archive area. The list of links will also be
maintained as a file that you can download should you want to write
some software to make family tree type listings.

Rules for artist names:

replace all spaces with periods.
leave off leading and trailing periods in names that have them
all lower case
no special characters ( % $ # @ ! & * _ = + ' , ) etc...
Jay O'Brien would be listed as obrien.jay
lastname.firstname order for people names
leave off "the" except for the band the.the
