This is the OS/2 port of XFree86 version 4.2.99.1. It is tightly based
on Holger Veit's work, I just tried to put the things together and made little
changes for the build to run through. Do not expect everything to work although
basic functionality should be there. Consider this an interim version until
Holger finds the time to work on the port himself again. In the meantime you
might give it a try.

This software comes with no warranty at all!
I would put this build somewhere between alpha and beta (but it's running
quite nicely on my machines). The server directly accesses your hardware and
may seriously injure it and do bad things to your system. I don't give any
guarantee that this won't happen and I'm not responsible for any damages or
difficulties you might run into by using this software. Use it at your own
risk! If something goes wrong, no one but you is to blame.

Installation instructions:

1. Unzip everything into the root directory. I you already have version 3.x
use a different drive (let's call it x:) because the top directory is also
\XFree86.
2. If you haven't already done so, install the EMX runtime.
3. Install xf86sup.sys. Version 1.516 is included in \XFree86\lib.
4. Set up your environment variables as described for version 3.x (see
http://borneo.gmd.de/~veit/os2/xf86os2.html for instructions) with the
following exceptions:
X11ROOT should point to your new drive (x:)
XSERVER is now 'x:/XFree86/bin/XFree86.exe', independent from the
graphics card.
5. If you also have version 3.x change PATH and LIBPATH dynamically before
starting the new server:
set PATH=x:\XFree86\bin;%PATH%
set BEGINLIBPATH=x:\XFree86\lib
Otherwise add the directories to PATH and LIBPATH in your config.sys.
6. Configure your server by running:
XFree86.exe -configure 2>error.log
You should end up with an OS/2 prompt. Now there should be a file
XF86Config.new in your %HOME% directory. If it isn't check the files
error.log for typos and \usr\adm\XFree86.0.log for XFree problems.
Eventually, copy XF86config.new to \XFree86\lib\X11\Xf86Config and merge it
with XF86config.eg according to your hardware and needs.
7. There is also the possibility to use xf86config.cmd which will give you a
menu for certain things (including a graphical configuration tool) or
xf86config.exe which, however, seems to be a little outdated.
8. Finally, startx.cmd should start your server and clients in the usual way
(check %HOME%\xinitrc.cmd or \XFree86\lib\X11\xinit\xinitrc.cmd)

So far I've tested it with the following graphic adaptors: Matrox G200, G400,
G550; nVidia GeForce2 MX 400; Elsa Winner with S3 Savage4; some flavor of
neomagic in a Thinkpad. 'Tested' means that the server itself as well as xterm
and twm are running. The G400 was tested a little more in daily use (fvwm3,
gimp, remote sessions on Solaris, AIX, and Linux workstations). I had some
trouble with the G550 when using 24+8bit overlay visuals. After terminating the
server my PM desktop was corrupt. Restarting the server in non-overlay mode
however, restored the desktop. Switching between X and WPS was no problem.
