IBM ANNOUNCES MICROKERNEL RESEARCH AGREEMENT WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI

AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 19, 1995 . . . IBM and the University of Miami have
entered into an agreement in which the university will use the IBM
Microkernel for research projects involving the creation and running
of microkernel-based operating systems.

Under the leadership of Dr. Burt Rosenberg, the University of Miami's
department of math and computer science will be creating a UNIX*
personality to run on top of the IBM Microkernel. The initial project
will be to port the LINUX** operating system to run on top of the
IBM Microkernel. The research project will be conducted in operating
system classes, giving students the opportunity to study the construction
of modern, microkernel-based operating systems.

IBM has signed microkernel research agreements with several other
universities, including the University of Notre Dame, Carnegie Mellon
University, Oregon Graduate Institute, France's IRISA at the University
of Rennes, the Universities of California at Riverside and Irvine,
and, most recently, Korea's Seoul National University. In addition,
the Open Software Foundation Research Institute is evaluating the
IBM Microkernel and providing feedback and consultation.

The IBM Microkernel provides a new way to structure system software by
reducing complexity and increasing the range of hardware and system
configurations that are supported by an operating system implementation.
It provides support for the microprocessor, memory management,
initialization and devices in the hardware. The IBM Microkernel allows
companies to leverage their software investments through the
microkernel's scalability, portability and modularity.
