I have yet to see a plugin that has amazed me with its speed.
remember; it is after all just a piece of native software and it
should perform just as well as the other native software on your
computer. right?

as for plugins being a good thing, well, I don't like them. as long
as they contribute to platform dependency they are most certainly a
bad thing. I can see their usefulness in niches. like in intranets.
but for plain vanilla web sites? thanks, but no thanks.

it most definitively is buggy on Linux. very buggy. then again,
Linux doesn't generate bucks for Netscape (or so they think) so they
don't give a damn. I'm surprised they even bother to release it for
Linux anymore. heck, they should become partners with Mickeysoft and
release it on Windows 95/NT only, because that's what they're
practically doing already.


I run Netscape navigator on Linux, SunOS/Solaris, IRIX, Windows 95,
Windows NT, Digital UNIX, and occasionally HP-UX. (funny, I never use
it under AIX). Netscape behaves badly on all UNIX platforms I've
tried it on, it sometimes freezes up on Windows NT and it is just
plain wild on Windows 95. I've experienced everything from freeze, to
full reboot via Out-Of-Memory-experiences.

maybe Netscape plain doesn't like me.

not IN Netscape as far as I can tell. I can use the movieplayer under
IRIX and probably xanim under Linux, but so can I do with Mosaic or
w3-mode for emacs.

| isn't a charity and I'm sure they could care less about my personal well
| being. Same for Microsoft. My point is that whatever the reason, they
| work with third parties, and I believe that's good for everyone. The more
| people we keep involved, the more chance for some great innovations.

great innovations? Netscape is doing just about everything BUT
innovating. they are like a bunch of kids who are building a cabin.
now they want antennas on the roof so they nail hub-caps to
floorboards and put them up while smiling proudly at the other kids.
sure, on paper the feature list now reads "has multiple antennae", but
it doesn't really mean anything.


jesus, it's like reliving the eighties. you remember the eighties?
when Lotus and Ashton & Tate were still at each other's throats to
sell people integrated software? yup, this is a rerun, only now you
get it with a RealAudio soundtrack and some network connectivity so
you can share mediocrity over a network. look at each other burn
company money in QuickTime VR while the High Priest preaches the
Gospel of VRML over RealLiveCyberVisionScrewBandwith(tm). by then
you're so stressed up you reach for Minesweeper to calm down before
the staff meeting where you're going to talk about all the new
possibilities of modern information technology in the office. what
idiots. they'll buy it.


someone should point out to the industry that the term "Open" should
not be used unless what you do is љreallyљ platform independent.
standards can be open. most software isn't.
