Hα survey of the Local Volume galaxies

Russian version

Among the newly observed objects, we discovered the galaxies UGC 2172 and NGC 3239 in the stage of a vigorous burst of star formation.
The images in the Balmer Hα line were obtained for 400 galaxies of the Local Volume with the distances within 10 Mpc at the 6-m BTA telescope (as well as the southern telescopes in Chile, India and South Africa) by the Laboratory of Extragalactic Astrophysics and Cosmology of the SAO RAS. This number exceeds the total number of nearby galaxies studied in the Hα line in all the other observatories around the world. The data obtained allowed to explore the structure of star formation sources in the galaxies of different types with a resolution of 10-30 parsecs and to determine the integral rates of star formation in galaxies on a time scale of about 10 million years. According to these data and the UV fluxes measured at the GALEX satellite, we have compiled a unique summary of 800 galaxies of the Local Volume where the differences in the star formation rates exceed ~10 orders of magnitude. A detailed presentation of the results is contained in the papers: Karachentsev et al. 2013, AJ, 145, 101; Karachentsev and Kaisina 2013, AJ, 146, 46; Kaisin and Karachentsev 2013, Astrophysical Bulletin, 68, 381.
