Public Lecture - Realizing Einstein's Dream: Exploring Our Mysterious Universe Other Fri, Oct 7 2005 3 p.m. 5 p.m. Ochoco 204 - Central Oregon Community College, Bend Physics Free Dr. James Brau, UO professor of physics will speak on 'Realizing Einstein's Dream.' The universe is mysterious. While science has established great understanding of ordinary matter, an unidentified substance ("Dark Matter") is much more common. Furthermore, a curious unexplained energy force ("Dark Energy") drives the universe's expansion at an ever-increasing pace - that is, its expansion is accelerating. What are these curious elements? We are now exploring such fascinating questions of the universe with experiments at particle accelerators on Earth, and in space. Results of this research may revolutionize our view of nature as dramatically as the advances which Albert Einstein achieved one hundred years ago. Dr. Brau will explain for the general audience several of the current exciting topics, describe the facilities which explore them experimentally, and present our current understanding of the science, which involves Higgs Bosons, supersymmetric particles, extra dimensions, and gravity waves. The presentation will be at an introductory level, appropriate for anyone interested in physics and astronomy. http://physics.uoregon.edu/~jimbrau James Brau, (541) 346-4766
