Dark matter in normal galaxies

Standard cosmological models face mounting problems on small scales. Rotation curves of dwarfs and LSB galaxies and a large number of dark matter satellites put significant stress on the models. High surface brightness galaxies (like our Milky Way) add additional layer of problems. I will discuss the status of the modeling the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies. I will pay attention to such issues as the constraints on dark matter profile, micro-lensing counts from the galactic bar, rotation and the structure of the bar. One of the central issues of the modeling is the exchange of the angular momentum between the disk and the dark matter. I will presentnew results of multi-million particles n-body simulations of secular formation of bars in cosmologically motivated disk + halo galaxy models. Our models have resolution of 30-50 pc - a factor of 20 better than previous galactic dynamics models. Our results indicate that in realistic models the exchange of angular momentum between the bar and the dark matter is much smaller than previously estimated. It is very unlikely that the dynamical friction is the way out of the problem of fast rotating bars in the presence of the dark matter.
