XMM-Newton Multi-Target Visibility Checker, V8.0 for AO7

Check the visibility of any location for the XMM-Newton Observatory with this tool.

There are three methods of checking visibility;

The output information can be reduced by specifying restrictions like range of revolutions and minimum visibility time for the target. The visibility is determined from a DataBase of Observable Bins (DBOB), each bin corresponding to a size of 2x2 degrees.

Further information about the XMM-Newton orbit details and viewing constraints as well as a description of the Data Base of Observable Bins (DBOB) can be found on the XMM-Newton Orbit & Constraint Details page.

Details about the behaviour of the XMM-Newton background are given in the following Technical Note: The Behaviour of the XMM-Newton Background.

For further information on the use of this tool and a description of the different parameters, please see our Vischeck Howto.

SIMBAD or NED Lookup

Please enter an object name to lookup in SIMBAD or NED;
Target Name   (eg; Abell 1750)

Please note; there is a 30 second timeout should SIMBAD or NED not respond.

Single Target Visibility

To calculate the visibility of a single target, please complete the following fields and "Submit" your request.

Target Details

Target Name   Target name or identifier for output (eg; Abell 1750)
RA   Decimal degrees or HH:MM:SS.S (eg: 13:30:52.5)
Dec   Decimal degrees or DD:MM:SS.S (eg: -01:50:27.0)

Visibility Details

Select either
Revolution Range First Revolution  (revolution range for AO-7 is, approximately, 1537 to 1720)
  Last Revolution
or
Date Range From Date
  To Date

Minimum visibility (minimum time the bin must be visible. Default is 5000 secs)

Multiple Target Visibility

To calculate the visibility of mutiple targets, please complete the following fields and "Submit" your request.

Target Details

The format is not too strict and the following are examples that can be processed:

  13:30:52.5 -01:50:27.0 Abell 1750  (colon seperated)
  13 30 52.5 -01 50 27.0 Abell 1750  (space seperated)
  13h30m52.5s -01d50'27.0" Abell 1750  (hms & d ' " format)
  202.71875 -1.84083 Abell 1750  (decimal degrees)
