The User Group (UG)

As announced in XMM-Newton News#20:

· UG replaces the XMM-Newton Science Working Team such as to ensure the broadest community input possible.

· UG adds a number of external members who participate on a rotating basis.

· UG advises the project scientist on all matters relating to the optimisation of the scientific output of the XMM-Newton mission (9 voting, 8 non-voting members, at least two meetings per year in VILSPA).

· The chairman of the UG will make an annual report to one of ESA's advisory bodies: The Astronomy Working Group.

UG comments on the SAS

1) Overall Criticism on the SAS documentation:

· In general: incomplete in parts & not very helpful to users without much experience with X-ray data analysis or the instruments.

· General introduction (as NASA-GOF SAS Guide) would be very useful.

· Task descriptions: partly incomplete (e.g. pattern for pn), missing links (e.g. between similar pn and MOS tasks), reference documents not linked (or not accessible) can task developers improve this?

UG comments on the SAS

2) SAS Performance/Operations:

· Very long command lines (many parameters): error prone, previous settings not stored (except for GUI)

· SAS tools missing for processing of multiple exposures on a field or mosaics (only emosaic for EPIC images), e.g. source detection? (PSF assumed to be constant) can task developers take an action?

· although this is an EPIC Cal/Ops Meeting, some SAS developers are here, others should be informed... (G. Vacanti & J. Osborne have been addressed as well)
