Travel options between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore are discussed below for those participants that will also be attending the "Communicating Astronomy to the Public Conference that immediately follows this workshop on October 1-3, 2003 in Washington D.C. (http://www.nrao.edu/ccap/).

How to Get to Baltimore:

By Air

Airport: The closest is Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI), which is about 13 miles (25 minutes) from the Institute.

Washington National, located in Washington, D.C., approximately 35 miles south of Baltimore, or Dulles International, west of Washington D.C., could also be used.

By Train

AMTRAK (1-800-USA-RAIL) and MARC (local commuter 1-800-325-RAIL) serve Pennsylvania Station between Charles and St. Paul streets, three blocks south of North Avenue (ten minute ride to STScI).

Taxi: Taxis are available at all arrival times. Fares to downtown Baltimore (a five-minute ride) run about $5.00.

Rental car: There are no car rental counters at Penn station. However, Avis provides a courtesy phone at the station. If you call them, they will pick you up.

From Washington, D.C. to Baltimore: MARC train service between Pennsylvania Station (Baltimore) and Union Station (Washington, D.C.) (total travel time roughly one hour) is available for less than $10 one-way. See the MARC train web page for more information.


By Car

From the South:

Take the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (295) north or I-95 north. Follow the signs to downtown Baltimore and use the Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (MLK) exit. Follow MLK north to Howard Street. (Directions continued)

Follow I-70 to I-695 (the Baltimore Beltway). Take I-695 north (Inner Loop) to Towson, continue around the Beltway to I-83 south. Take the 28th street exit east to north Howard street. Turn left. (Directions continued)

Take I-95 south to I-695 (the Baltimore Beltway). Take the Beltway west (Outer Loop) toward Towson until you reach I-83 south. Use the 28th street exit east to Howard street. Turn left. (Directions continued)

Directions Continued:
Continue north on N. Howard Street. After crossing 29th Street, continue straight ahead, but keep to the left lane. Turn left on Wyman Park Drive until you arrive at a fork in the road (one block) where Wyman Park Drive intersects with San Martin Drive. Bear right onto San Martin Drive and follow this curving road to the Institute's main building on the left.

Parking is available for STScI visitors at the Colonnade for a $5 fee. This hotel is within easy walking distance to STScI. Please inform the parking attendant that you will be attending a conference at STScI.

Getting Around

Public Transportation: The Mass Transit Administration (410-539-5000) operates bus, Metro subway, Light Rail, and MARC train service. Buses and Light Rail run daily, 24 hours a day. Metro operates Monday through Saturday. The MARC train operates weekdays along the Baltimore/Washington corridor. For fares and schedules call the MTA. Baltimore Trolley Tours (410-752-2015) offers service throughout downtown daily.

    Annapolis

    Home of the U.S. Naval Academy and the nation's oldest state capitol in continuous use, Annapolis is located at the confluence of the Chesapeake Bay and Severn River. The Annapolis Visitor's Bureau (410-280-0445) can provide information on tours of the Naval Academy and the State House, as well as sight-seeing cruises from the city dock, self-guiding tours of the historic district, and special events for late September.

    Washington D.C.

    The District of Columbia is about 35 miles southwest of Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Popular visitor's attractions include the White House, residence of the President of the United States; the U.S. Capitol building; the Lincoln, Jefferson, and Vietnam Memorials; the Washington Monument; the Library of Congress; the Supreme Court; and the Smithsonian Institution, including the Air and Space Museum, National Gallery of Art, and National Archives. The D.C. Visitor Information Center (202-789-7038) can provide detailed information.
