The Baltimore-Washington Starburst Series presents:

Next Event:

"Stellar Evolution Models for Population Synthesis"

Gerardo VАzquez (STScI)

I will review the latest progress on stellar populations models for massive stars. Then, a new perspective on this subject will be offered when we present the results by using the new release of Geneva tracks that include stellar rotation. The new tracks have been implemented in the current version of Starburst99. I will discuss the main results when we compare our models with observations of different integrated parameters from stellar populations with massive stars such as, e.g., star numbers ratios, bolometric luminosity, ionization energy.

Time: 15 June 2005, 12:00n (Wednesday)
Place: STScI, Lyman Spitzer Boardroom

LOGISTICS

  • GSFC: Due to security concerns, GSFC talks will no longer be held on the center. The talks will be in room 408 of the Aerospace building, about 3/4 miles west of the GSFC main entrance at 10210 Greenbelt Rd (193). To get there, go out of the GSFC main gate and turn left, or continue past the main gate when coming from the BW Parkway. The Aerospace building will be on your left, just after a Lutheran church. There is a NASA Federal Credit Union sign on the front of the building. The talk will be on the 4th floor in room 408. Since it is off-site, badges will no longer be needed. A free pizza lunch will be provided. In order to know approximate numbers for the pizza, please let Jon Gardner know 1 day in advance that you are coming.

  •
  • JHU: See STScI.

  •
  • NRL: NRL is located in SW Washington.  People coming from Baltimore should come down the BW parkway, past GSFC.  The BW parkway feeds into DC 295, which becomes I-295.  At about milepost 2, there is an exit for NRL and DC Village.  Get off 295 at this exit (exit 1), and continue on the access road (Overlook Ave) past Bolling Air Force Base.  You will see the main gate of NRL on your right just before the 3rd traffic light. The visitor center is in the building just before (and outside) the gate. Turn right into the parking lot for the visitor center from Overlook Avenue before turning right towards the main gate. Non-US citizens: Requests for visitors who are not US citizens must be made one week ahead of time. Non-US citizens should RSVP to Jackie Fischer with their name, nationality and institution one week before the talk so she can handle the NRL paperwork. On the day of the talk, all foreign visitors must stop at the visitors center to get a visitor badge. Those from NATO countries who have their passports or green cards with them may then enter unescorted. Other foreign visitors will need to be escorted, so call Jackie (202-767-3058) or the secretary (202-767-3842) from the gate before 11:45am. US citizens: Visitors to NRL who are US citizens must stop at the visitor center and get a visitor badge. Proof of identity is required. Getting a badge can take 15 - 20 min if there is a line. E-mail ahead of time if you can.

  •
  • STScI: No advance registration for visitor badges is required for STScI. You will have to check in at the STScI reception and receive your visitor badge. Parking passes will also be available from the receptionist. You should be prepared to use the JHU Visitor Lot, which is a 5 min walk from STScI. Please contact Claus Leitherer or go to the STScI visitor information if you are uncertain about the location.
