Testing the Unix Systems

Introduction

Whenever there's a system change (new hardware, fixing problems, new routers, etc.) here's how we test it to be sure everything is working

General Test

Database Test

PC Toolbox System Test

Perform the following tests using a test program (phase 2 ID < 1000).
  1. Push the REPROCESS button. This tests database reading and PLIB.
  2. Push the VERIFICATION button. This tests SQR.
  3. Push the OPS TOOL SET button and process the program. This tests the OPS Tool Set and all of the processing software that it runs.
  4. Push the APT button and see if the APT interface comes up. This tests APT.
  5. Push the SPIKE button and see if the Spike interface comes up. This tests Spike.

Phase I

The Phase I tests are essential only if a proposal solicitation is open. Otherwise all mail to newprop returns a message saying that we aren't taking proposals. Note: this test has higher fidelity if done from a non-STScI account, e.g. any ISP.
  1. Send mail to "newprop@stsci.edu" with the subject line "request templates". The 8 or so template files should be emailed back
  2. Send mail to "newprop@stsci.edu" with the subject line "swordfish". You should get an email back saying that the message couldn't be recognized.
  3. Submit a valid proposal to "newprop@stsci.edu" and verify that it is processed correctly and that acknowledgment is sent.
