New PSFs added to PSF Library:

The Cycle 7 WFPC2 PSF proposal was recently completed and the PSFs - nearly 1000 of them - have been extracted from the images and added to the WFPC2 PSF library on WWW. The Cycle 7 data consisted of 40 second images of the crowded Omega Cen field, taken through the wide filters F300W, F450W, F606W, F702W and F814W, one orbit per filter using a spatial scan performed over a 4x4 grid to improve the PSF sampling. These broad filters complement the standard photometric filters used in the Cycle 5 and 6 PSF proposals (F336W, F439W, F555W, F675W, and F814W); the F814W filter was used in Cycle 7 to provide continuity. For several years now, the WFPC2 online PSF library has provided a WWW-based easy-access interface to the PSF database, with convenient search and retrieval capability. The new Cycle 7 PSFs have boosted the library's contents to nearly 4600 PSFs.

New HTML Documents added to the WFPC2 Website:

Two documents have been added to our website in HTML format:
- The 1999 WFPC2 Handbook Update
- The WFPC2 Cycle 8 Calibration Plan

These documents were initially released on WWW in May in postscript format and paper copies were distributed at the June 1999 AAS Meeting. The new online html version provides more efficient navigating and searching capabilities; although both formats will continue to be maintained on WWW. The Handbook update contains the latest information on data analysis and calibration issues; the calibration plan ISR presents the WFPC2 calibration plans for Cycle 8.

Preliminary Filter Selection Results announced for WFC3:

The Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) Project and the WFC3 Scientific Oversight Committee (SOC), together with the STScI, are pleased to announce the results of a special workshop to discuss the selection of filters for the WFC3 held on Wednesday, 14 July 1999, at the Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore MD. Provided on the WWW site is a preliminary draft of the WFC3 filter list from the filter workshop and the Science Oversight Committee meeting. In addition, all workshop talks are available on the Website.

The WFC3 will replace WFPC2 in the Hubble Space Telescope as part of the final servicing mission in July 2003. As presently planned, WFC3 consists of two channels: UVIS and IR. The UVIS focal plane contains a CCD camera covering 200-1000nm with a 160 x 160 arc second field of view and 0.04 arcsec pixels. A filter selection mechanism identical to WFPC2 will provide 48 spectral elements (optical filters, grisms, etc.) for this channel. The IR focal plane will contain a HgCdTe 1024 x 1024 array covering 850-1900nm with a 140 x 140 arc seconds field of view. We anticipate that the IR channel filter wheel will hold to 10 to 20 optical elements.
