Proposals
Executed
.
The
following
science
proposals
were
successfully
executed
in
the
last
week:
5131
Studies
of
Spiral

(GTO)
5144
Study

Optical

(GO)
Pointing
Statistics
.
The
pointing
accuracy
of
the
FOC+COSTAR
apertures
was
analyzed
using
images
taken
since
the
PDB
was
updated
on
21
January.
There
were
8
observation
sets
which
had
measur
able
targets
for
this
analysis.
This
small
sample
precludes
any
serious
statistical
analysis,
but
in
general
the
target
was
acquired
within
+/
1
arcsecond
of
the
aperture
center
in
V2
and
V3.
In
addition
to
these
images,
there
were
3
sets
where
the
target
was
outside
the
field
of
view,
with
offsets
>4
arcseconds
of
the
aperture
center.
These
results
emphasize
the
need
to
use
accurate
GASP
coordinates
for
the
target
in
order
to
use
the
small
FOC
apertures.

F/48
Sensitivity
and
Background
.
Analysis
of
the
F/48
images
taken
when
the
f/48
relay
was
successfully
switched
on
after
the
servicing
mission
shows
that
the
DQE
appears
to
be
~60%
of
the
predicted
values
over
most
of
the
useful
bandpass.
.
The
analysis
of
the
F/48
images
was
complicated
by
the
high
background
which
was
present
during
the
switch
on.
This
background
started
out
with
the
same
characteristics
as
pre
viously
seen
events
with
the
`white
spot'
in
the
center
of
the
image
and
the
`arc'
at
a
count
rate
of
~1e2
counts/sec/pixel.
However,
over
the
6
hours
following
initial
turnon,
the
count
rates
rose
dramatically
to
a
maximum
of
0.3
counts/sec/pixel,
causing
the
full
format
internal
flat
images
to
be
completely
saturated.
FOC
Contamination
.
Reexamination
of
the
SMOV
DQE
and
PSF
images
taken
with
the
FOC
F152M
and
F220W
filters
show
no
evidence
of
any
contamination
as
seen
by
GHRS
and
FOS
blue.
More
conclusive
observations
are
being
scheduled
for
the
end
of
March
as
part
of
the
normal
FOC
Cycle
4
calibration
program
to
better
examine
this
issue.
