Abstract:
Demonstration of the use of PATTERN, MULTIACCUM sequences
for deep field observations. The difference between the optional parameter
PATTERN-ORIENT and the visit-level parameter ORIENT is stressed.
This example also has NICMOS attached parallel observations.

Questions

    Observing_Description:
The proposed science is to observe the HDF with NIC2, scanning a strip
of 50 arcseconds in length along PA=30+/-5 degrees, and using the
YSTRIP-DITH pattern. NIC1 and NIC3 will be used in parallel during
the observation. Even if NIC3 is not parfocal with the other 2
Cameras, the degraded images are still desired by the observers.
For the purpose of scanning the strip along PA=30+/-5 degrees with NICMOS, the
observers have the option to use the exposure-level parameter PATTERN-ORIENT,
instead of the visit-level parameter ORIENT. Both cases are presented here
(in two separate visits), and the pros and cons of each approach are
presented:
1) PATTERN-ORIENT: the observers choose an orientation for the
PATTERN relative to the target, but NOT for the detector's Y axis,
which remains unspecified. For the observation specified in this
proposal, the value of PATTERN-ORIENT=30. The advantage of PATTERN-ORIENT is
a complete flexibility in scheduling, since the are not constraints imposed
on the telescope's roll angle. The disadvantage is that, since the PATTERN
and the detector are not aligned, the resulting map may be sparse, and the
edges of the strip may not fall within the detector's FOV; in addition, the
other two detectors may not fall within the specified strip.
2) ORIENT: the observers choose an orientation for the detectors (and,
in this specific case, they leave the parameter PATTERN-ORIENT to its
default value, so the strip covered will be aligned along the
detectors' Y axis). The visit-level parameter ORIENT has the
disadvantage of greatly reducing the scheduling flexibility, since a
constraint is imposed on the telescope's roll angle. The advantage is
that the FOV of all three detectors will fall on the strip. For
NICMOS, PA=30+/-5 degrees translates to a orientation angle
(ORIENT=PA+225) 255+/-5 degrees.
The observations with NIC2 are in the F160W, with NIC1 are in the
F110W, and with NIC3 are in the F160W filters. The observations will
be along the Y-axis of the detectors (YSTRIP-DITH pattern). The
chosen readout mode is MULTIACCUM, using 3 iterations of the sequence
MIF1024 (total integration 1,024 seconds) at each pattern
position. The MULTIACCUM sequence is selected for an effective
cosmic-ray removal. The multiple initial and final reads mimick an
ACCUM exposure of about 1024 seconds with 9 initial and final
reads. This helps reducing the readout noise. The exposures are
iterated to get deep observations.
In the first visit, where PATTERN-ORIENT is used, a generic target is
specified for the NICMOS attached parallels (if no generic target is
given, RPS2 will issue a warning requesting an ORIENT for the pointings
of the two parallel detectors).
In the second visit, the NICMOS attached parallels can use the primary
target, since a value of the ORIENT is specified.
