Latex Samples
-------------

I recommend using the sample.tex file as a starting point,
and replacing text, etc. with your own material. It includes
examples of figures, tables, and references. The other
files sample_2 and sample_3 might be useful in some
special cases. You might want to latex and print them
also as a reference.

To process your article (obvious):
latex filename
dvips filename
ghostview filename.ps


Page Limits
-----------

A 60 min. talk = 10-14 pages in the final book.

A 30 min. talk = 6-8 pages in the final book.

A 15 min. talk = 4 pages in the final book.

A poster = 4 pages in the final book.

Note: the shortest allowed article is 3.5 pages!


Estimating Page Length
----------------------

We are specifying page limits in terms of NAR book
pages, so you will need to think a bit about how the
length of your article in NAR preprint format (result
of running latex) translates to length in the final
book.

It turns out that the template from NAR outputs in
"preprint format" where the text occupies more space
than it will in the final book version. Whereas the
figures will typically occupy that same space in either
format. Hence the complexity.

For those prefering a simple equation, here it is:
The length of an article in the final book is roughly
given by

B = 0.5 + 0.6 P + F

where B = length in the final proceedings book
P = pages of text + references in the preprint format
(excluding title, author list, and abstract)
F = effective number of pages occupied by figures

So if the preprint has 3.0 pages of text + references and
1.5 pages worth of figures, it will thus be 3.8 pages in the
book, which is a good length for a short talk or poster.


Here is a more detailed example showing how to estimate
the page length of your contribution in the NAR book format.
Note that a page of text in NAR preprint format (what the
template will produce) converts to 0.6 pages in the
conference book.

Title / authors / abstract 0.5 pages

Text / references :
8 pages in NAR preprint format x 0.6 = 4.8

Figures / tables:
0 full page figure / table 0 x 1.0 = 0.0
2 half page figure / table 2 x 0.5 = 1.0
1 quarter page figure / table 1 x 0.3 = 0.3

Total in NAR book format 6.6 pages

(This is based on 835 words per page in book = 96 lines
x 8.7 words/line, and 509 words per page in preprint
format = 38 lines x 13.4 words/line.)


Question & Answer Session
-------------------------

If you include audience questions with your article, please
include them within the page limit. If this becomes a problem
for you, or takes too much space, please contact John Biretta,
and we will work something out.


Figures
-------

The preferred method of including figures is to use
encapsulated postscript files and reference them in the
article using the \includegraphics* command.
(See examples in sample.tex)

Please use your name (or other unique identifier) as
the first part of the postscript file name. Example:
biretta_fig_jet.eps. This will help us keep files straight.


Color Figures
-------------

Several people have asked about color figures. Yes! We are
able to include color figures. There will be, however, a
$350 page charge to authors per color page printed in the book.
(Regretably, the Workshop does not have enough funds to cover
these.) The good news, is that people with color figures in
their articles get 200 free offprints of the article.

Color figures should be included in the same way black and
white ones are -- they go in the texy near where they are
cited.


Transmission of Completed Articles
----------------------------------

Please transfer your latex file, and postscript files for
any figures, to our FTP site. You should find a subdirectory
already made with your name; please place the files there.

------------------------------

We plan to post proceedings on our WWW site once editing
is completed in the fall. These will likely be in the
form of a single postscript or PDF file for each article.
