About Magnetic Tape...

Magnetic tape
drives can be used to either copy files from a tape to your directory, or to copy files from your disk to a tape. Keep in mind that these instructions apply only to tapes written on VMS systems; non-VMS tapes require special handling--contact a system manager for help.

Tapes need to be handled carefully to ensure their integrity. Ignoring these precautions will cause data errors or complete loss of your files. Some points to keep in mind:

There are three types of tape drives available for your use. The various types of tapes hold different amounts of data and are write-protected and initialized in slightly different ways; write protection and initialization will be discussed in the next section. Table 10.1 lists the types of tape drives available at the Institute; Table 10.2 lists the locations of tape drives. Blank tapes are available from the operators in room 126. If you need help finding a tape drive, see your system manager.
