Lists

A variety of information is maintained by the STScI Library to assist astronomers in their research. The information is in a series of files that can be searched using the LIBSEARCH command on the science cluster. After typing LIBS at the DCL prompt, the menu shown in Figure 9.2 will appear.

The following types of information are accessible:

ALL preprints (option 2): List of preprints received in the STScI Library during the past couple years. Citations are added to the data base as papers are published. (A preprint is a scientific or technical paper that has been accepted for publication in a refereed journal).
HST preprints and published papers (option 3): Contains all papers published in refereed journals where the paper was based on HST observations; this list includes many papers from non-refereed literature as well.
REPRINT file (option 4): List of preprints and reprints received for papers published in journals to which the library does not subscribe.
JOURNAL holdings (option 5): List of titles of journals to which we subscribe, along with the volumes available in the STScI Library.
SPECIAL list of astronomical catalogs & atlases (option 6): Quick list of catalogs and atlases--published as either monographs or in journals-- including some that we don't own, so you won't waste time looking for them.
OBSERVATORY e-mail, telephone, etc. numbers (option 7): List of telphone, telex, fax, and e-mail addresses for observatories and astronomy departments worldwide.
ACCESSINFO - how to get there and what to do when you arrive (option 8): Eclectic file of instructions for accessing various services and data bases from the VMS Science cluster.
NON-STScI information resources (option 9): Command procedure that allows you to connect to remote data bases.

In addition to the files accessed by the LIBSEARCH command, there are other commands that access files provided by the library. These commands include EMAIL and SNAIL. EMAIL gives the electronic mail addresses for astronomers around the world and SNAIL provides postal addresses for observatories and astronomy departments.

You can also search the library's catalog of holdings by connecting to the machine STLIB (using the SET HOST command, as explained on page 151) and logging in with the username "STLIB"; this is a captive account for which you need no password. Although a manual for using the data base is available in the library, the system is simple enough that you can likely find most of what you need by following the on-screen prompts.
