System Announcements

There are three ways that the system administrators can inform users about vital events occurring in the system, such as an imminent shutdown, or resources that may wreak havoc with user processes:

The first way is through the welcome message that you see when you first log in from a terminal.
The second way is through the local.system newsgroup. You are responsible for reading this newsgroup on a regular basis. (See the discussion of News on page 147.)
The other way is through broadcast messages.

Broadcast messages are sent to every user currently logged on to the system--unless the user has specifically typed the command SET TERM/NOBROADCAST. It is not a good idea to turn off broadcasts in all of your windows because system managers usually use a broadcast only to advertise an imminent shutdown.

Most users should not turn off the broadcasts. Broadcasts are usually used only to warn you of an impending system shutdown.
