DAILY REPORT #2332

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/18/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/19/99

Daily Status Report as of 078/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6668 (Star Formation and Galaxy Morphologies in
Distant, X-ray Luminous Clusters of
Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to examine distant rich clusters of galaxies
which are natural laboratories for studying galaxy evolution because they
provide large galaxy samples at fixed redshifts. Spectacular WFPC images
of distant clusters of galaxies have revealed surprisingly complex galaxy
morphologies and much higher interaction rates than in present-day
clusters. The obseervation completed as planned with no reported problems.

1.2 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 8091 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS
Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high
galactic latitude, non-scripted, parallel observations. The observations
were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7713 (WF/P-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental
Darks pt3/3)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images.
This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to
provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels.
The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed STIS/MA1 7298 (A Snapshot Survey for UV bright Quasars at
redshift below 3)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make
ultraviolet snapshot observations of the bright quasar S4-1128+38-081 which
has a redshift (Z) below 3.0. The goal is to find quasars bright enough in
the ultraviolet for spectroscopic follow-up in the range of 900-1200
Angstroms. A wave length calibration image was also taken. The
observation were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.5 Completed STIS/CCD 7398 (White Dwarf Stars in Visual Binaries:
Testing Stellar Degeneracy)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make
observations of the white dwarf star the visual binary system WD0727+483.
White dwarfs, the final evolutionary endpoints for most stars, are
important to our understanding of stellar evolution and to our testing of
critical aspects of fundamental physics. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6357 (The Nuclear Morphology of Elliptical Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the early type, large,
elliptical galaxy NGC5370 (taken from a list of 150 galaxies) in order to
study its nuclear morphology. This survey will complement Illingworth's
snapshot study of later Hubble types. The observations were completed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 7622 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Internal Monitor)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a set of Cycle 7 internal monitoring
calibration measurements. A variety of internal exposures are obtained in
order to provide a monitor of the integrity of the CCD camera electronics
in both bays {gain 7 and gain 15}, a test for quantum efficiency in the
CCDs, and a monitor for possible buildup of contaminants on the CCD
windows. A bias calibration and an internal flat calibration image were
also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2/STIS/MA1/MA2 7410 (Deep UV Imaging of the Hubble
Deep Field)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of Hubble Deep
Field HDF-STIS-P. The observations will extend the searches for Lyman
break galaxies to B~ 29, two magnitudes fainter than possible with the
existing HDF data and more than four magnitudes fainter than the current
limit of ground-based spectroscopy. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 7287 (Recovery and Characterization of Old Novae
in the Globular Clusters M80 and M14)

The WF/PC-2 was used to determine whether a few very close binaries
in the core of a globular cluster can drive the dynamical evolution of the
10^5 - 10^6 stars in the cluster. The proposal completed without reported
problems.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 7
Successful : 7

Scheduled Reacquisitions : 6
Successful : 6

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled : 13
Successful : 13

2.3 Operations Notes:

Using ROP SR-1, the SSR EDAC error counter was cleared four times.
Using the same ROP, the TRI module was re-configured.

The RMGA calibration test was successfully completed. The unit was
powered on at 077/2132Z. The soft keep-alive monitoring was disabled at
077/2237Z, and the PSEA test mode was enabled to collect RMGA rate data.
The soft keep-alive monitoring was re-enabled at 077/2320Z. The RMGA was
powered off at 077/2321Z. Test data is being processed and analyzed.

A TTR was written for a data hit at 078/054405Z that caused 1,171
missing minor frames.

3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS:

Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations.
