HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

DAILY REPORT #1428

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 07/07/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 07/10/95

Daily Status Report as of 191/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed GHRS/2 5466 (The Interaction Between Io and The Plasma
Torus)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make Echelle
spectrographic observations of the plasma torus which is a result of the
interaction of the planet Jupiter and its moon Io. Of particular interest is
the O II emission line at 2471 A0. The observations were completed and
scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5663 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4: Photometric Calibration
Monitor: Fields Part 2)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of globular cluster NGC-5136
with various filters in order to check the photometric calibration of the
WF/PC-2. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were
reported.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5984 (Absorption - Selected Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to study the morphology of galaxy Q1548+0917, at
redshifts from 0.4 to 1.0, that are absorbing light from background quasars.
The absorbing galaxies were discovered from ground-based surveys. The
observation was completed with no reported anomalies.

1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6028 (Composition of Surface Units on
Io)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Jupiter's moon Io
(Longitude 340 and 160). The objective is to create a multi-spectral map of
the surface from 0.22 to 0.79 microns. The observations were completed as
planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor.
1)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat
calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical
alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations were completed
as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6284 (Stellar Populations in the Local Group)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of NGC-206, which is a OB
association of local group galaxy M-31, to study its mass function and
stellar population. The observations were completed as planned, and no
problems were reported.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6058 (Direct Imaging of a Circumstellar Disk: Beta
Pictoris)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the circumstellar disk on
the star Beta Pictoris (aka, HD50241) in order to study the brightness
profile of the disk. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5839 (Gamma Ray Burst Counterparts in the
Ultraviolet)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of object
GRB79-613 which is thought to be an optical counterpart of a gamma ray
burster. Three filters from the blue to the ultraviolet were used. The
observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.9 Completed FOS/RD/BL 5537 (Cycle 4 Superflat Spectral Flat Fields)

The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to make observations of
ultraviolet standard star BD+28D4211 which has a relatively featureless
spectra. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were
reported.

1.10 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6251 (Medium Deep Survey - Crafting
Test)

The WF/PC-2 was used in this continuation of the medium deep survey.
The proposal is targeting rare objects (lenses, peculiar galaxies, faint
stars) and sources related to the faint blue galaxy problem. This
observation was completed with no reported problems.

1.11 Completed FOC/96 5941 (HST Medium Deep Survey - Crafting Test)

The Faint Object Camera was used to make observations of the jet in
the nuclear region of galaxy M-86 looking for changes in the jet since last
year. Proper motions in the jet should be detectable in this time span. A
dark and an internal flat calibration images were also taken. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6126 (Evolution of Binary Neutron Stars and their
White Dwarf Companions)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of binary STAR-1713,a
neutron star/pulsar and its white dwarf companion. The photometry will be
used to determine the cooling age of the dwarf star. The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.13 Completed GHRS/2/1 5733 (Dynamics and Energy Balance in Stellar
Transition Regions, Cycle 4 Augmentation)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Sides One and Two) were used to make
observations of late-type spectroscopic binary star HD22468 (aka, HR1099) to
aid in a study of dynamic and energy balance in stellar transition regions.
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.
