HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #1089

PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST
Daily Status Report as of 066/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed FOC/96 5146 (Ultraviolet Observations of Globular
Clusters)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make ultraviolet
observations of the core region of globular cluster NGC-6397.
Several different filters were used to look for temporal variability
in its stars, and to look for blue stragglers, cataclysmic
variables, post asymtotic giant branch stars (AGBs), variable blue
stars, and hot white dwarfs. The first observations were reported to
look a little peculiar due to a combination of saturation and
roll-over effects. The second set of observations were received and
displayed. Except for recentering events, they all were reported to
look nominal.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5092 (GTO Low Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the
prime science observations. This is part of a survey to take
pictures of a large number of fields within 30 degrees of the
galactic plane. The intent is to determine the luminosity function
of low mass stars and the mass density in the solar neighborhood.
Some of the images from day 063 were reported to be spectacular,
showing distant galaxies through a globular cluster. Also, a dust
lane could be seen running diagonally across the image. The other
images were reported to be nominal, except for recenterings.

1.3 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR
Radio Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxy 3C287.0
as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxy's morphology.
Six images were received and displayed. No anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5350 (The Fossil Record of Star formation in the
Leo I and Fornax Dwarf Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make an observation of the dwarf galaxy
Leo-I. The observations was monitored, and displayed in the OSS.
Except for a recentering, it was reported to be nominal.

1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5392 (Mapping Io's Surface and
Volcanic Activity: Cycle 4 Medium)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the surface of Jupiter's moon
Io to study changes since the Voyager Mission and before the Galileo
Mission. Images were made before and during an eclipse of Io which
occurred at 065/0419Z. The images were reported to be nominal.

1.6 Completed FGS 5061 (Linking the HIPPARCOS to the Extragalactic
Reference Frame. Part 4 of 6)

The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make astrometric observations
of star NEWEGOB-22 which apparent position lies near an
extragalactic object. The intent of these observations is to tie the
reference frame to the extragalactic reference frame. All of the
observations occurred during LOS. No anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed FOC/96 5144 (Study of Optical Emissions Associated With
Radio Jets and Hot Spots)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of
the active galactic nuclei within galaxy 3C317 to learn more about
its morphology, ionization state, and the dynamics in the narrow
line emission region. Several different filters were used. Four
observations were executed in fine lock, with no apparent problems
in the engineering telemetry. The science observations still remain
on the science tape recorder.

1.8 Completed FOC/96 5139 (A Search for Low Mass Companions to Nearby
Astrometric Binaries)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to to search for faint
companions near the astrometric binary star GL1245AA. Two FOC images
were received and displayed. The images were reported to be nominal,
and no anomalies were noted.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5404 (Narrow Band Imaging of Hydrogen Poor
Planetary Nebulae: Cycle 4 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make narrow band images of the small
dynamical structure of the hydrogen poor planetary nebula
PK208+33D1. This nebula contains gas that consists of nearly
undiluted products of the nuclear burning that is thought to result
when a final helium shell flash occurs after the complete removal of
the hydrogen envelope. Four images were received and displayed.
Several recentering events were reported.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5403 (X-Ray Emitting Planetary Nebulae: Cycle 4
High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the X-Ray emitting planetary
nebula PK64+5D1 to look for subarcsecond structures such as
radiative shocks, cometary structures, bow-shocks, and wind blown
tails. Ten different narrow band filters were used. Some recentering
events were reported to have occurred. No other anomalies were
noted. Three observations still remain on the science tape recorder.
