HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #1070

PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST
Daily Status Report as of 039/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed FGS 4893 (Orbital Motions of Close Binary Stars: Cycle 3
High)

Fine Guidance Sensor #3 was used to make astrometric observations of
the binary star system HD80671 and HD61994 to obtain their orbital
elements. These observations are important since most of the
estimates of stellar mass are made by observing elements of these
systems. The astrometry was monitored and no problems were seen in
the telemetry.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 4709 (WF/PC-2 Internal Monitor)

The WF/PC camera was used to make a series of routine bias, dark and
visual flat calibration images to monitor the instrument's
performance. The observations were monitored in the OSS, and the
data quality was assessed. No anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed GHRS/2 4786 (SMOV COSTAR/GHRS Sensitivity MSTM)

The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make sensitivity
observations of the COSTAR/HRS optical path using standard star
Mu-Columbae. The spiral search, the peakup, and the deflection
calibrations went as expected. No anomalies were noted with the
science observations.

1.4 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 5240 (SMOV WF/PC-2 Flat Fields
Calibration)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a set of visual internal flat images.
Nine images were received and displayed. They were reported to be
okay. Three images still remains on the science tape recorder, and
will be analyzed later.

1.5 Completed FOS/BL 5444 (A UV Spectral Library of Metal Poor Massive
Stars)

The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to make ultraviolet
observations to the metal poor massive star NS44-65 which is located
in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This is to help study its stellar
atmosphere and stellar evolution. Two sets of spectral observations
were received in the OSS. No anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5475 (A Snapshot Survey For Blue Straggles in
Magellanic Cluster Cores)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make short exposure snapshot images of the
blue straggler stars located in populous cluster NGC-1860. A
populous cluster is the Magellanic Cloud equivalent of a galactic
globular cluster. The observations were made with two different
color filters. The intent is to find out if blue straggler stars
exist within these clusters. Both of the images were received. No
anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed FOS/BL/FGS 4908 (SMOV FOS/FGS Fine Alignment)

The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to find the location of its
apertures, the plate scale, and the orientation and separation of
its detectors by making observations of NGC-4374. Each part was
executed on both the Red and Blues Sides. The onboard target
acquisition was successful. A total of 25 observations were
received. No anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed FOC/96 5139 (A Search For Low Mass Companions to Nearby
Astrometric Binaries)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to to search for faint
companions near the astrometric binary star VYS799. Two FOC images
were No anomalies were noted.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5099 (Imaging and Spectroscopy of a Complete
Sample of Bright Nearby Quasars)

The WF/PC-2 was used to image nearby quasar PG0953+414 using filter
F606W. The goal is to identify the morphology of the underlying
galaxy. The observations were executed as scheduled, and on problems
were reported.
