Microsoft Windows 2000 and
Space Telescope Science Institute PCs

Now that Microsoft has officially launched Windows 2000, we wanted to provide you with our plans for upgrading Institute PCs. The Computer Systems Operations (CSO) Department is planning an incremental migration from Windows NT to Windows 2000 since both operating systems can function in the same environment. Going forward, new purchases of laptops, desktops and servers should arrive with Windows 2000 pre-loaded and will become part of the computing environment. Users will notice some changes in the interface* but the basics (like username password) remain unchanged.

The migration of existing Institute PCs to Windows 2000 will start in June of this year, with an expected completion date of April 1, 2001. If you have requirements for Windows 2000 prior to this date, please email your request to rrussell@stsci.edu; otherwise, email migration requests to pcsupport@stsci.edu.

CSO staff members have been running the Windows 2000 operating system for nearly a year, getting a feel for the changes and gaining the experience needed to support general use at the Institute. Everyone has had favorable remarks; the reliability has been the most pleasant surprise. So far, no system running Windows 2000 has had a Blue Screen of Death!

Following are the minimum hardware requirements to run Windows 2000.

The above requirements are slightly higher than what Microsoft recommends, but we believe it is the minimum required for our users to successfully run their applications. I.e., your system will not perform adequately with less than these minimum requirements!

According to our latest inventory, there are 40-50 PCs that fall below these minimum requirements. In the next several weeks, we will be doing a detailed inventory of systems and will notify each division of upgrades required in order to move forward with this migration.

As we move forward, we will post updates to the plan, including more specific dates for rollouts to various user groups, divisions, etc.

* If there is interest, we will hold a mini-training session for users to discuss changes you might notice as your systems is upgraded from Windows NT to Windows 2000.
