Astronomers in the ESA Space Telescope Division at the Space Telescope Science Institute
The European Space Agen cy (ESA) provides scien tif ic personnel to the Space Telescope Science Institu te (STScI) as part of its co llaboration with NASA on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Project. There are curren tly open ings for astronomer s funded by the ESA H ST Mission w ith in the Scientific Program D irectorate of ESA, through a contract with the STScI. These scien tif ic positions are th ree-year term, ren ewab le contr acts with salaries and benefits commensurate with those of AU RA employ ees at th e STScI. Astronomers work in key areas throughout the Institu te including instrumen t support, user support, observation planning and schedu ling, and ar chival support. In gener al, functional duties en compass sev eral of th e activities associated w ith th e instrumen ts curren tly on board HST or to be deployed in the futur e servicing mission. This includ es the char acter ization, on orbit testing and calibration of the scien tif ic instrumen ts and/or the support to users during the prepar ation, imp lementation and ex ecu tion of the observing programs. Duties for other HST related positions in clud e the scien tif ic ov ersigh t of projects to fu rther improve the HST observ ing efficiency and user interf ace, or related to th e scien tif ic use of th e HST arch ives. Efforts ar e made to suitab ly match the background and experience of qualif ied cand idates to program needs. Some specific posts currently open include the following - direct support to Users of HST instru ments currently on - preparation of support to U sers of HST instruments to and CO S - development of archiv al tools and systems in support of activities: bo ard, A CS, WFPC 2, NICMOS, STIS and FGS be deployed on th e forthcoming serv icing mission: WFC3 the HST arch ives and the Hubble Legacy Arch ive project

Astronomers spend 50% of their time on personal resear ch and 50% in support of the science mission of the Institute. Ther efore, in add ition to maintain ing an activ e program of research in astronomy, the successfu l candid ates will be expected to carry out functional tasks related to Institu te initiatives. The STScI professional environmen t is stimulating and intended to facilitate indep endent r esearch . STScI supports postdo ctoral, graduate student and visitor programs, workshops and meetings, and has ex cellent computer, techn ical and libr ary infrastru cture. Cand idates for these positions must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degr ee in astronomy or physics, and have consider able research experience with an established record of independent research and scientific publications in astronomy. The primary qualif ications we ar e seeking are excellen ce in instrumental or observational r esearch. Applications ar e encourag ed from both junior and senior astronomers, as the experience and accomp lish ment of the successful applicant will deter min e the lev el of th e appointment. STScI is an Equal Opportunity , Affirmative A ction Emp loyer and therefore, women and minority candidates are strongly encouraged to apply . As these con tracts ar e funded by ESA, nationals from ESA member states ar e strongly en couraged to apply. Send your curricu lum v itae and bib liography, along w ith a signed letter of application and a brief statement of how you think working at STScI may further your research an d functional goals, and arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent electron ically to th e address b elow . Applications received by August 31, 2007 will receiv e full consid eration.
