Laboratory for processing of very large data amounts on the basis of Big Data was made in SSAU

02.03.2015, 11:58

An alignment meeting on data mining, storage and processing of very large data amounts on the basis of hardware and software complex Big Data took place in Samara State Aerospace University.

The workshop was organized with the support of the government of Samara Region and the Regional Department of Information Technologies and Communications, whose leader Stanislav Valerievich Kazarin welcomed the participants on behalf of the Governor Nikolay Ivanovich Merkushkin.

According to SSAU President Viktor Aleksandrovich Soyfer, Big Data technologies are particularly relevant nowadays and are at the peak of popularity around the world, as they are one of the keys to success and competitiveness in various sectors of economy and management of complex systems.

In particular, the results of data research and processing can be used in health care and medicine, information networks, location-based services, in transport, interactive systems and online services.

The main speakers at the workshop were honoured guests - Vladimir Igorevich Budzko, Deputy Director for Research of the Institute of Informatics Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Aleksandr Viktorovich Shmid, Chairman of the Board of JSC "EC-leasing".

According to Aleksandr Shmid, in the near future computers will take competitive solutions better than the people, even the most experienced leader. Therefore, first of all it’s necessary to prepare the IT-specialists in the field of Big Data, and start doing it in the prepared sites, as well as in the enterprises themselves, possessing large amounts of data.

It's no coincidence that SSAU became a platform to discuss the use of Big Data technologies and opportunities offered by the new IT-direction. The laboratory for processing of very large data amounts on the basis of the hardware and software complex was made in the University and the necessary equipment was purchased.

"We are at the stage where the modern IT-technologies will also be applied in Samara Region," - said Viktor Aleksandrovich Soyfer.

It is to be recalled, that last year the University has purchased a special hardware and software complex for processing, analysis and storage of very large data amounts. According to Sergey Borisovich Popov, Professor of the Department of Technical Cybernetics of SSAU, the complex is based on a modern platform and IT-infrastructure.

The way the Big Data technology integrates, organizes, manages and analyses data is characterized by "four V»: Volume, Variety, Variability and Velocity.

Data processing requires powerful processors and advanced computer programs.

"Currently, the hardware and software complex is under development and data input. In addition, we study its capabilities to make data handling and storage effective in terms of practical application,"- said Sergey Popov.

Several ministries and departments of Samara Region at once expressed their interest in the development of the new technologies. Regarding the workshop results, SSAU management proposed to form a working group of the number of the meeting participants to formulate concrete proposals and recommendations on the use of scientific activity results in the area of Big Data.

One of solution was the proposal for SSAU was to make agreement on cooperation in the area of Big Data with the Department of Information Technologies and Communications of Samara Region, the International Market Institute, LLC "Open Code", IPSI RAS, IPI RAS and JSC "EC-leasing".
In addition, in the near future SSAU and the International Market Institute will develop a program of training, retraining and advanced training of personnel having knowledge in the field of management decision-making based on Big Data technologies.

"In the coming decades there will be a radical separation both in business and in state management to those who make decisions based on inner instincts, and those who use data mining of the very large amounts, - expressed his confidence Stanislav Valerievich Kazarin. - Systematic use of Big Data will allow Samara Region and SSAU to meet many challenges in scientific researches and technical modelling for the regional economy needs in the field of space, engineering, safety protection and many others".

For reference
Specialized software and hardware complex Big Data for processing and storage of very large data amounts using modern methods of data mining and spatial intelligence.

The challenges solved by using BigData are the following: organization of storage of very large data amounts by ensuring the most efficient methods of its processing and analysis; creation of knowledge based on mining the entire spectrum of heterogeneous unstructured information; fast dataflow processing and analysis on a real-time and formation of immediate decisions on this basis.
