Bright Supernovae - 1998.

Bright Supernovae - 1998.

This data comes from IAU Circulars and occasionally more data will be provided on IAU's Astronomical Headlines page. An archive of the 1998 updates and 1999 updates to this page are available.

This is a partial list of the SN discovered in 1998. For more information, you can look at the following Supernova Catalogs:

  • IAU List of Supernovae since 1885
  • Asiago's Supernova catalog
  • M. Richmonds's lisf of SNe since 1989
  • AstroArts Supernovae in 1998

163 (actually 1 fewer) Supernova were reported in 1998 (163 last year), 35 in NGC and IC galaxies (29 last year), 54 better than 18th Mag (36 last year). The brightest this year was 1998bu in M96 topping out at Mag 11.6, followed closely behind by 1998S at 11.9 and 1998aq at 12.0. 5 Extragalactic Novae were also reported in 1998.
