The Arecibo Observatory, located in the karst mountains of Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and operated by Cornell University under a cooperative agreement with the US National Science Foundation, is recruiting the following positions to support the Electronics, Computer, and the Angel Ramos Foundation Visitor Center operations: 10789 -- Digital Section Head Design complex systems that acquire analog signals and digitize, process, and store, or pipe-line data to networked computers. Work with staff to design suitable modules to interface user equipment to observatory equipment for optimal functioning. Direct the work of the junior engineering specialists and technicians working in the digital group. Collaborate with users and scientists to adapt equipment to fit specific research requirements and develop new techniques and instruments. Develop quality standards for all systems and maintain quality. Required qualifications: BS in Electronics Engineering. Three to five years experience in high speed digital design, digital signal processing, motion and control systems 10790 -- Transmitters Section Head Responsible for designing special transmitter equipment, maintenance and calibration of transmitter section equipment and assist other Electronics team members as requested. Oversee the installation of equipment for the UHF, VHF and HF transmitters and design/construct specialized ancillary equipment for the Observatories transmitters. Develop and update instruction manuals and oversee maintenance of inventory records ensuring appropriate level of parts. Supervise two electronic technicians. Develop quality standards for all systems and maintain quality. Required qualifications: BS in Electronics Engineering or Electronics Technology field with three to five years experience in operation, calibration and maintenance of high-voltage equipment or equivalent combination. Supervisory experience required. Preferred qualifications: Masters degree in electrical engineering with more than 5 years experience. 10794 -- Telescope Systems Specialist Work with the Observatory's scientific and engineering teams to provide technical support for instrumental control, data acquisition and data analysis. Assist in decision-making and program planning; identify and monitor telescope data for problems which might affect the functioning and performance of engineering subsystems; propose and implement solutions as appropriate. The position has primary responsibility for maintaining, developing and documenting the Observatory's CIMA user interface (UI) software and associated utilities. Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, with more than five but less than seven years experience or equivalent combination. Knowledge of the GNU Linux operating system and high-level programming languages including C, Tcl/Tk and Perl; HTML. Experience with astronomical observations. Preferred qualifications: Masters degree or PhD in Astronomy, Computer Sciences or related field. Research experience using astronomical software packages. For all the above positions: Must be comfortable working up to 500 feet above the ground on suspended telescope. Fluency in English required, both oral and written. Good report writing communication skills. Proven leadership skills, ability to work effectively in a team environment, comfortable presenting in front of large groups. 10934 - Lead Cashier for the Angel Ramos Foundation Visitor Center Operate cash register and accurately process sales transactions, as well as customer's returns/credits. Maintain displays neat and clean, and make sure they are well stocked all the time. Process special orders and associated paperwork, including delivery/preparation. Provide specific information to customers pertaining products and services. Research circumstances of customer's problems and concerns, and provide them with a solution. Provide OJT to sales staff members, and facilitate resources and/or materials to carry on duties. Responsible to open/close the store during normal operating hours, perform daily closing reports, and secure deposits in the safe box. Required qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; more than one but less than two years of experience or equivalent. Preferred qualifications: Associates degree in Business Administration. 10935 - Science Museum Specialist for the Angel Ramos Foundation Visitor Center Responsible to provide visitors information about our mission, museum regulations, facilities use and exhibit content. Opens museum at designated hours, greets visitors, and ensures a pleasant visitor experience. Arranges facility tours for schools or other groups, and provides science lectures to school groups. Provide OJT to museum staff members, and facilitate resources or material to carry on duties. Provides assistance during special events. Required qualifications: Formal training beyond a HS Diploma of 6 months to one year duration or equivalent, or Associates degree in Science. More than six months, but less than one year of experience. Preferred qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Physics or equivalent. Astronomy and teaching courses/certificates. For all the above positions: Computer literate: Windows OS and MS-Office and fluency in English is required, both oral and written. Good communication skills and teamwork oriented.
