Prop osal Title: Are molecular clouds magnetically subcritical or supercritical overall?A survey of Zeeman observations of OH in absorption ABSTRACT:
Although much Zeeman effect work has been done on the cores of molecular clouds, very little is currently known about magnetic fields outside the cores where most of the molecular gas resides. Are molecular clouds as a whole magnetically subcritical (magnetically dominated) or are they magnetically supercritical? The answer bears upon the origin and evolution of molecular clouds before cores form within them. We propose the first systematic observational survey of this question using the Zeeman effect in OH absorption lines toward extra-galactic continuum sources that lie behind molecular clouds. We have identified a sample of 25 such sources. We propose to conduct short test observations of these sources to measure OH optical depths toward them. Then we will choose about 10 of the sources and conduct Zeeman effect observations, spending an average of about 20 hours of telescope time on each.
