HI spectroscopic observations of the QSO/galaxy pair 3C232/NGC3079

We prop ose to observe the QSO/galaxy pair 3C232/NGC3079 in HI with the Arecib o radio telescop e to lo ok into p ossible counterparts of the three strongest optical lines detected with HST seen at 1369, 1420, and 1530 km/s. Only the 1420 km/s comp onent is detected with the lower sensitivity VLBA observations. The detection of the other two velo city systems would allow us to set total HI column densities and metal abundances by assuming comparable Tspin values to what we have determined for the 1420 km/s system. These observations would solidify our interpretation that we are viewing HVCs in the near halo of NGC 3079 and would also thereby strongly favor the hyp othesis that our own Galaxy's HVCs are very close to the Galaxy, in analogy to what we see in the halo of NGC 3079.
