Proposal Type: General Category: Sub-Category: Observation Category: Total Time Requested: Prop osal Title: ABSTRACT:
This proposal has 2 technical and at least 4 scientific goals. Technically: (1) We want to develop the modified basketweave technique for Galactic observations with ALFA, necessary to complement the standard basketweave technique (used frequently for GALFA observations) for regions around Dec of 18 degrees. (2) We want to investigate and test strategies for commensal observing with the ZOA group, and also develop necessary software for the reduction of data obtained with WAPPs in the basketweave mode. Scientifically: (1) These observations will be used to study in detail an expending shell, discovered in the SETHI survey. (2) We will be able to study at least several forbidden-velocity line wings. (3) We will continue mapping of the anti-center region (for which we have already obtained large maps with ALFA) this will complement efforts by Putman et al. to study the disk/halo interface. (4) And, find new galaxies in the ZOA; please see the corresponding commensal proposal by Henning et al.
