MAPPING HI IN A SPECTACULAR SHELL

Interstellar structures are visible in the 21-cm line and tend to be either thin sheets or long filamentstwo distinctly different entities. These structures are best observed at somewhat high latitudes so that they can be compared with other datasets, such as IRAS and H-alpha, without contamination by unrelated gas along the line of sight. HI structures like this have never been mapped with high angular resolution and sensitivity because nearly all HI sky maps have been done with angular resolution 36 arcmin. We propose to map a large shell with Arecibo's 3.4 arcmin resolution to study the structure and kinematics of the abundant small-scale filaments that are already seen in IRAS emission. We expect these observations to help us understand the overall kinematics, structure, and statistics of the HI shell on large and small scales; and also the environments from which it came and into which it is currently expanding.
