The Fate of Cooling Flow Gas: An Arecibo HI 21-cm Absorption Survey

We prop ose to search for cold neutral hydrogen in the intra-cluster media of 95 rich, X-ray bright clusters of galaxies. The observations will b e made with the aim of detecting absopriton features against radio-loud (S1.4 > 50mJy) sources via total-p ower p osition switched mo de, or double-p osition switched mo de for stronger sources. We will employ the WAPP to ensure that the entire infall regions of the cluster centers are covered in the velo city ranges of the sp ectra (i.e. ±5000kms-1 around the recessional velo cities of the ob jects). The results will b e used to constrain the various co oling flow mo dels put forth in recent years, esp ecially after the interesting results of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of galaxy clusters.
