Surface properties of Titan

We request time for S-band radar observations of Titan near the opposition of the Saturn system in February and March 2008. We have been studying the scattering properties at 13 cm of Titan's surface for the past six oppositions as the latitude of the sub-Earth track changes. For the first time, there will be significant common coverage with Cassini radar imagery. Directly correlating the properties of these radar echoes with specific terrain types from the Cassini radar imagery will provide information about their physical and electrical properties. Specular echoes can be interpreted in terms of the dielectric constant and rms slopes while the absence of a specular echo indicates surfaces that are rough at wavelength scales or have extremely low dielectric constants due to very high porosities. The S/N of the observations should be large enough to put interesting limits on the porosity.
