Arecibo radar ranging measurements of the Galilean satellites

Our ob jective is to use radar ranging measurements of the Galilean satellites in order to detect orbital changes due to their tidal interaction with Jupiter. Tidal forces from the satellites cause a bulge on Jupiter, which Jupiter's rapid rotation rate carries forward faster than the satellite motion. This leading bulge tends to accelerate the satellites and this results in displacement by the satellites over some period of time. Radar line-of-sight position measurements from Arecibo will be at least 12 times (6 km vs 75 km) more precise than the best optical astrometry for the Galilean satellites, and will provide much more sensitive approach to look for tidal effects.
